Cochrane House makes your Stirling holiday refreshingly straightforward: three bedrooms, two bathrooms and Stirling Castle less than a five-minute walk away on foot. Recently refurbished to a high standard, this semi-detached holiday home sleeps six and suits families, friends, or three couples. Upstairs are two double bedrooms and a third with a small double bed, all made up with quality bedding. A spacious family bathroom serves this floor, while a downstairs shower room takes pressure off busy mornings. The living and dining areas provide somewhere to regroup after a day out, and the kitchen covers self-catering when you want the flexibility of cooking yourself. Fast WiFi, a Smart TV and fluffy white towels handle the practical extras. Pay-and-display parking is at the rear. The Portcullis near Stirling Castle is a very comfortable short 5 minute walk.
The advantage of staying this close to Stirling’s Old Town is that history becomes part of the route rather than a separate outing. Walk uphill, and you pass streets shaped by the castle above them, with the Tolbooth, Old Town Jail, Mar’s Wark and Argyll’s Lodging clustered around the historic core. Stirling Castle itself has royal apartments, great halls and views across the Forth Valley; the Church of the Holy Rude beside it was the setting for the coronation of James VI. Lower down, cafés, independent shops and restaurants bring you back into present-day Stirling. Old Stirling Bridge is also walkable, and the National Wallace Monument stands across the river on Abbey Craig. Cochrane House earns its value here through location: you can fit a great deal into a day without paying for parking at every stop or trying to keep a group together in multiple cars.
Stirling is unusually well placed for changing the pace from one day to the next. The Battle of Bannockburn adds another major chapter of Scottish history just outside the centre, with Doune Castle to the north-west. Families can head to Blair Drummond Safari Park, while Loch Lomond and the Trossachs bring walking, cycling and forest activities into the mix. The Falkirk Wheel and Kelpies lie in the other direction. Edinburgh and Glasgow are both possible as city days, although a full week can easily be filled without travelling that far. You can move from castles and museums to hills and lochs, then slow things down with coffee, shopping and a wander through Stirling. Cochrane House is intentionally calm and welcoming in the middle of it all.
