The Quackery is a big holiday cottage near Langport that sleeps up to 11 guests across five bedrooms, giving loads of space for families and friends to come together without ever feeling crowded. Reached by a quiet country lane and surrounded by beautiful gardens, this is a place where the outdoors becomes part of the holiday. A gentle stream winds through the grounds, kingfishers flash across the water, ducks paddle past, and herons are regular visitors, creating a setting that changes with the seasons. There is every reason to spend as much time outside as inside, whether that's enjoying breakfast on the verandah, soaking in the hot tub, challenging each other to a game of croquet or badminton, or gathering around the fire pit as the stars begin to appear. The pizza oven and barbecue turn mealtimes into occasions in their own right, while children have space to run, climb, and play on the trampoline and tree swing. When the weather turns cooler, the house is just as inviting. The spacious sitting room with its log burner is made for relaxed evenings together, and the Aga keeps the kitchen warm and welcoming throughout the winter months. Dogs are equally welcome, making it easy for the whole family to enjoy everything this corner of Somerset has to offer.
Langport is only a short drive away and has a friendly selection of independent shops, cafés, pubs and riverside walks beside the River Parrett. Nearby Somerton is well worth exploring for its characterful streets, antique shops and places to eat, while traditional country pubs can be found throughout the surrounding villages. The Somerset Levels offer miles of walking and cycling through one of England's most distinctive landscapes, and Ham Wall Nature Reserve attracts wildlife enthusiasts throughout the year with opportunities to spot marsh harriers, bitterns and spectacular starling murmurations in the colder months. Burrow Mump rewards walkers with far-reaching views, while bicycle hire, canoeing and kayaking provide another way to discover the area. However you spend the day, returning to The Quackery is part of the experience. Previous guests often comment that the photographs simply don't capture how beautiful the gardens really are, and it's easy to understand why once you've settled into the peaceful surroundings.
The Quackery is also well-placed to explore many of Somerset's best-loved attractions. Spend the day discovering the dramatic cliffs and caves of Cheddar Gorge, climb Glastonbury Tor, admire the magnificent architecture of Wells Cathedral or wander through the gardens at Hestercombe, Forde Abbey and The Newt. Families have plenty to choose from, including Wookey Hole, Longleat Safari Park, Noah's Ark Zoo Farm and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at Yeovilton, while history lovers can explore Barrington Court, Montacute House and Dunster Castle. Bath makes an excellent day trip for its Roman heritage and elegant Georgian streets, and the Jurassic Coast around Lyme Regis is close enough for a day beside the sea. Whether your holiday is filled with sightseeing or simply slowing the pace, The Quackery offers the sort of setting that encourages everyone to linger a little longer, enjoy each other's company and head home with memories that last long after the bags have been unpacked.
