About Mowbarton Barn

Mowbarton Barn is a dream, a genuine home from home which combines the best of all worlds. The spacious holiday home sleeps nine people in four bedrooms, two having ensuite bathrooms, and is ideal for big families, extended families, or groups of friends who are looking for comfort and convenience in a stunning location in Somerset. The owner says Mowbarton Barn is "miles from anywhere and close to everywhere". You'll find it difficult to believe you're only 20 minutes from the M5 as you sit and survey the 12 private acres and views over the Vale of Avalon. The property is in Mudgley, two miles from Wedmore and within a short drive of some of the region's most famous sights and attractions.

Mowbarton is home to a small but beautiful vineyard which produces grapes for Mowbarton Estate Somerset Sparkling Wine, an exclusive and extremely popular Brut which has been available since 2019. Making wine in Somerset is nothing new. The owners have planted grapes within sight of Glastonbury Tor, following a tradition that stretches back 800 years to the monks of Glastonbury Abbey. Mudgley also boasts a cider-making heritage: Roger Wilkins produces CAMRA award-winning cider that you can buy directly from the source, along with fresh eggs, vegetables, and local Somerset cheeses. Roger's Barn is open seven days a week and is a scenic ten-minute stroll from the barn. Man cannot live on cider alone (don't tell Roger we said that!), but you'll find a village shop two miles away in Wedmore and a Tesco and Sainsbury's five miles away in Cheddar.

Somerset has a reputation for being somewhat sleepy and laid back. Don't let the gentle beauty of the landscape fool you. While it's true that you can spend lazy days relaxing on a lounger in the barn's private walled garden or working up an appetite for a barbecue or pub lunch by rambling around the Westhay Moor Nature Reserve, there is more than enough to keep even the most adventurous spirit happy. Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole are 15-minutes from Mowbarton Barn, and you're only ten miles from the north Somerset coast and the popular resort beaches of Weston-Super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea. The Mendips are popular with mountain bikers, as are the trails around Shepton Mallet, Cranborne Chase and Exmoor. A bike hire shop in Wedmore will deliver bikes to Mowbarton Barn if you book in advance. Dry skiing and wind sports are readily accessible for something fun and different.

Glastonbury Abbey and Wells Cathedral are seven and nine miles away from the barn, and there is a wealth of beautiful houses and gardens to visit like Barrington Court, Montacute, and Lytes Cary. Further afield, but still within an hour's drive, are the historic sights of Bath, vibrant Bristol, Longleat, Yeovilton and Stonehenge. Puxton Park and Noah's Ark Zoo are great for kids.

Location (Somerset)

Accommodation Comprises:

Mowbarton Barn is a gorgeous barn conversion with accommodation over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • Take your pick from two relaxing sitting rooms. Both have original oak beams and comfortable seating. The larger room is ideal for socialising while the other one has a log burner and a more intimate atmosphere with TV and board games for screen-free family fun.
  • A third reception room doubles as a single bedroom and a study for guests who need to work during their stay.
  • There is additional space to relax and socialise in the sunroom where glazed double doors open onto the terrace.
  • Make family meals memorable in the huge farmhouse kitchen/diner. It features a modern range cooker and a long refectory table. The owner makes the room even more welcoming by providing a selection of local goodies that include freshly baked bread, cider, cheese and pickle.
  • Laundry and cleaning facilities are kept out of sight in a convenient utility room.
  • A cloakroom with a WC and handbasin is a must in a house this large.

Upstairs:

  • The four bedrooms have suitably rustic names to suit the rural location. Hayloft is the master bedroom, furnished with a king-sized bed with an ensuite bathroom: bath, separate shower cubicle, WC and handbasin.
  • Tractor Shed has zip-link beds that can either be one king or two singles, depending on your requirements. It also features an ensuite with a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • The Byre is a lovely double room with views of what was formerly the dairy.
  • Pigsty has adult-sized bunk beds to accommodate guests of all ages.
  • Spacious family bathroom has some of the best views in the house and includes a bath, walk-in shower, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: The barn has its own sheltered walled garden and there’s a meadow over the lane for picnics and playing. One terrace is shaded by a vine-covered pergola with views stretching for miles; the other, with table, chairs and a bbq, is perfect for al fresco dining. There is also a small lawn as well as parking for at least four cars, three spaces being undercover, plus bike storage.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath towels are included with the hire of Mowbarton Barn. A travel cot and a high chair are available on request. Pets and smoking are not permitted.
