About Gwalia Cottage

Gwalia Cottage sits comfortably in its surroundings. Made from locally quarried stone and slate, the two-bedroom pet-friendly cottage sleeps four people and is perfect for couples, families or friends to enjoy a self-catering holiday in Snowdonia. It is on the edge of Blaenau Ffestiniog, close to amenities and attractions yet peaceful enough that you can enjoy a quiet cup of tea in the garden without distraction. Cafes, shops, the train station, a great fish and chip shop, Indian restaurant and friendly pubs like Y Chwarelwr (The Quarryman) are all within a 10-15 minute stroll.

Blaenau Ffestiniog was once the world's leading producer of slate. Oakeley was the largest slate mine globally, employing 17,000 miners - some of whom lived in Gwalia Cottage. You will see evidence of the mining industry everywhere you look, from attractions like Llechwedd, where you can go deep underground on a mine tour, or Bounce Below and Zip World Caverns, where former mines have been turned into a subterranean trampoline and zip line adventure. Even a simple walk along local footpaths will see you passing pieces of slate that have fallen from remnant piles. Instead of being the Slate Capital of the World, Blaenau Ffestiniog is the adventure capital of North Wales. As well as having exciting zip lines and trampolines, the town has hair-raising downhill MTB trails with an uplift at Antur Stiniog.

There are so many places to visit during your stay at Gwalia Cottage. Walk or take the Victorian train to Snowdon's peak (or Yr Wyddfa to use its Welsh name). Some visitors take the train up and walk back to get the best of both experiences. The pretty Italianate village of Portmeirion is around 20 minutes from the cottage, or drive five minutes further to Porthmadog and lovely beaches like Morfa Bychan. Harlech beach is the closest beach and just twenty minutes drive away. Take a ride on the Ffestiniog Railway, wander around Harlech or Conwy Castle, or spend a lazy day exploring the beautiful Llyn Peninsula with its great surfing beaches and scenic walks. Snowdonia National Park has award-winning golf courses, coarse, fly and beach fishing, and endless miles of footpaths, bridleways and cycling routes to traverse.

Gwalia Cottage is available for bookings all year round, with a cosy multi-fuel burner that makes it as welcoming in winter as it is in summer.
