Lower Wood Farmhouse is a period stone farmhouse on the Downton Hall Estate, reached by its own mile-long drive, so the house and its grounds are completely private. Cattle and sheep graze the surrounding fields, hens roam the run and ducks drift across the pond, with Clee Hill on the horizon. It is a genuine working farm, restored inside to pair that character with real comfort.
Five bedrooms sleep twelve. At its centre is a generous open-plan kitchen built around a blue Aga, with a long dining table and a deep corner sofa opening onto the terrace, equipped for a houseful with a Sage coffee machine and a full-size American fridge-freezer. A separate sitting room at the front has an original brick inglenook fireplace, and the children have a playroom of their own with a racing simulator, an art corner and a play kitchen.
The grounds are where the house comes into its own. A private pedal-kart track winds through the lawns with four Berg karts to race, a hot tub is positioned to catch the sunset over the hills, and a wood-fired pizza oven and barbecue anchor the terrace. Sam, who farms the land, takes guests on a guided tour of the working cattle farm behind the house.
Ludlow, eight minutes away, is one of the finest food towns in Britain. Beyond the gate lie the Shropshire Hills, miles of footpaths and a handful of excellent country pubs.

Getting here: the house is approached by a private mile-long gravel drive, part of what makes it so secluded; higher-clearance vehicles suit it best. Dogs: one well-behaved dog is welcome, with the ground floor as their space and a two-acre paddock for off-lead running, supervised outdoors as the hens roam freely. For riders, five stables and a paddock are available by prior arrangement, with bridleways leading from the property. We are unable to host weddings, parties or events. Check-in from 3pm, check-out by 10am.
