Shippon Barn is so amazing that you will be torn between wanting to brag about how clever you were to book it, and keeping it a secret so that your friends don’t steal it from under you when you want to return! Being set back from a quiet road means you will not be disturbed by traffic noise, yet the property is only a two-minute walk to both the White Lion and The Crispin - two great pubs which are ideal for a relaxed drink or a delicious meal. With room for up to eight guests in three bedrooms (plus two sofa beds), it is no wonder that Shippon barn is so popular with couples and families.
In addition to having excellent pubs, Great Longstone is a lovely village with an attractive village green and friendly community. It is less than three miles from Bakewell, and there is a lovely walk or cycle that starts near The Crispin and takes in the incredible view from Monsal Head before reaching Bakewell where there are a generous variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants serving locally sourced ingredients in their home-cooked meals. Bakewell runs a superb weekly market every Monday, attracting more than 160 stallholders from all over the region. If you miss Monday, you do not have to miss out because Bakewell is full of independent retailers stocking unique and beautiful items.
Buxton is a grand spa town around eight miles from Bakewell. Wealthy middle and upper-class Georgians and Victorians flocked here for their holidays, both to enjoy the restorative benefits of the waters and to show how fashionable they were. There is a fantastic walking trail taking you around some of the town’s most impressive buildings, including the elegant homes that line The Crescent.
No holiday to the Peak District National Park is complete without a visit to Chatsworth House. Even if you do not want to spend a dizzying few hours being bombarded with the gilded beauty of the interior, just driving through the park and seeing the building's iconic facade will leave you impressed and possibly more than a little envious. Chatsworth provides a great day out with lots for everyone to enjoy, including a farmyard for the kids. Haddon Hall is one of the best preserved medieval and Tudor houses in Britain, showcasing a different era of domestic beauty.
It really doesn’t matter what season you visit the Peak District National Park, or what the weather is like when you are here. The scenery is as breathtaking when painted in the soft green of spring as it is coated in sparkling white frost and snow. What is important is that you have a place to stay that is the perfect blend of cosy country charm and luxury, with subtle touches that leave you in no doubt you are treating yourself to a special experience, just like Shippon Barn.
