Losehill Cottage is one of a collection of superb self-catering cottages at Oaker Farm near Hope in the heart of the Peak District National Park. With its sunny patio, cosy sitting room with a log burner and two comfortable bedrooms that can sleep up to four guests, it is ideal for couples or small families. The friendly 16th Century Cheshire Cheese Inn is a leisurely 20-minute walk from the door.
The village of Hope is only a mile from the farm. Here, visitors will find a small convenience store, farm shop, a choice of takeaways and a family-run butcher. The oldest building in the village is St Peter's church, which is practically modern in comparison to the nearby Navio Roman fort, just outside the village of Brough. Although Hope is a somewhat sleepy village for most of the year, it comes alive during the annual Hope Beer Festival and the Hope Music Festival. The village is also one that keeps the ancient Peak District tradition of well dressing alive, with its four wells decorated with beautiful displays at the end of June every year.
The Hope Valley is in the geographic centre of the Peak District National Park. Staying at Losehill Cottage is an excellent choice for anyone who loves being outdoors, especially those who will appreciate the lattice of footpaths and cycling routes that make exploring the area such a pleasure. Hope is close to Edale and the start of the long-distance Pennine Way, and only a short drive from Derwent and Ladybower Reservoirs, the latter of which was the practice site for the famous Dambusters raid.
Attractions nearby include Peveril Castle, Blue John Cavern, and the charming village of Hathersage where Robin Hood's second-in-command, Little John, is buried in the churchyard. Spend a day shopping and sightseeing in the elegant Georgian spa town of Buxton, or peruse the shops (and market stalls, if you are there on a Monday) at Bakewell. The plague village of Eyam is a 20-minute drive from the cottage, while the splendid Chatsworth House is only ten minutes further. Hope has a mainline train station with a regular train service to Sheffield and Manchester.
There is so much to see and do when you stay at Losehill Cottage, whatever time of year you visit. As with all of the cottages at Oaker Farm, it can be booked on its own as a private escape, or together with one or more of the other properties to accommodate extended families or friends. Please see the owner's website for more information.
