Living
Cronkley Cottage sits on the edge of Derwent Reservoir, with every room enjoying far-reaching water views. This light-filled two-bedroom cottage is a peaceful countryside hideaway, designed for year-round comfort with underfloor heating, a cosy log burner, comfortable super-king beds and high-speed WiFi. It’s a place to truly switch off, with a huge sofa for relaxed afternoons and an outdoor BBQ and dining area perfectly positioned for sunsets. Evenings are all about stargazing through the telescope and toasting marshmallows by the firepit under Northumberland’s dark skies. Set within the North Pennines AONB, with walking trails and fishing on the doorstep, the cottage provides a restorative base for romantic escapes, active breaks or relaxed family getaways, ideal for those who love fresh air, big skies and the feeling of time slowing down.
Inside the Cottage
You enter into a bright, triple-aspect kitchen and dining space with views in every direction. The large dining table is ideal for unrushed family meals, and the well-equipped kitchen has everything you need, including plenty of countertop space, a fridge freezer and a second drinks fridge to keep your drinks cold, and ample space for longer stays.
The heart of the home is the living room, with a log burner, a huge comfy sofa and a smart TV. It is perfect for cosy afternoons wrapped in warmth by the fire, and offers a relaxing setup for family time, board games or a quiet evening watching a movie. It’s also a lovely spot to curl up with a cup of tea and watch the reservoir transform with the weather - a simple pleasure that quickly becomes part of the rhythm of your stay as the light shifts across the water.
Two well-appointed bedrooms offer super king size beds, each positioned so you can look out to the water without leaving the comfort of bed. One bedroom can be configured with twin singles, and an optional pull-out bed is available for a child. The cottage sleeps up to four adults and one child.
A spacious bathroom sits between the two bedrooms, with a bath and a separate walk-in shower, and there is an additional guest WC off the living room.
The cottage benefits from high-speed Starlink internet and a desk in the spacious dual-aspect end bedroom for those moments when you need to work.
Families will also find a selection of games along with a toy box for younger guests.
Outdoor Living
Outside, the private garden wraps around the cottage, offering different spots to enjoy every part of the day whether you’re chasing the sun or finding a quiet place to unwind with a drink in hand and watch the water while listening to the birds.
Start your morning with a coffee on the garden bench at the front of the cottage, soaking in the sunrise and the expansive views across the reservoir as the stillness of the valley settles around you.
Spend sunny afternoons on the west-facing terrace, which has an alfresco dining area and an outdoor kitchen with a large charcoal BBQ island and food prep space. It is ideal for long, leisurely meals and watching the sky glow with colour as the sun sinks towards the water, silhouetting the pine trees in dusky pinks and oranges.
As night falls, make use of the telescope to stargaze under Northumberland’s famed dark skies. Then gather around the Solo Stove smokeless firepit - perfect for toasting marshmallows and enjoying long, memorable evenings chatting beneath the stars.
Adventures on your doorstep
At Cronkley, there are adventures right on your doorstep. Without getting in the car, you can explore the walking and cycling paths around the edge of the Derwent Reservoir or spend a leisurely day fishing in its well-stocked waters.
If you are drawn to the water, it’s only a four-minute drive to the nearby Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club for watersports and open-water swimming (when the weather allows!). Slaley Hall’s international standard golf course and spa and Allout Adventures are just down the road too.
If you fancy venturing further afield, you’ll find a wealth of places to explore nearby. Located on the border of Northumberland and County Durham, Cronkley Cottage is ideally placed to explore both counties. We provide a detailed guide for guests with plenty of ideas for places to eat, visit and explore across Northumberland and County Durham.
