Location (Norfolk)

Old Hunstanton is a charming coastal village in Norfolk, located just north of the better-known resort town of Hunstanton. Unlike its Victorian neighbour, Old Hunstanton has retained much of its traditional character, offering visitors a peaceful atmosphere, historic buildings, and unspoilt natural surroundings.

The village dates back to medieval times and is centred around the beautiful St Mary’s Church Old Hunstanton, parts of which date to the 13th century. Historically, the area was a small fishing and farming community, with its development shaped by the fertile land and access to the North Sea. In contrast, nearby Hunstanton was deliberately developed in the 19th century as a seaside resort by Henry Styleman Le Strange, leaving Old Hunstanton as the quieter, more traditional settlement.

Today, Old Hunstanton is known for its wide sandy beach, backed by dunes and colourful striped cliffs, which are unique on the east coast of England. Visitors are drawn to its scenic coastal walks, golf course, and relaxed village charm. With its blend of history, natural beauty, and tranquillity, Old Hunstanton offers an ideal escape for those seeking a more authentic and less crowded seaside experience.

A short distance inland, the countryside opens into gently rolling farmland dotted with traditional Norfolk villages. Ringstead and Thornham are both within easy reach and offer a glimpse into rural life, with historic churches, local pubs, and artisan food producers. Thornham, in particular, is well known for its salt marshes and coastal paths, as well as its reputation for excellent local seafood.

Further along the coast, visitors can explore Brancaster and Burnham Market. Brancaster boasts a vast sandy beach and the historic remains of a Roman fort, adding an archaeological dimension to the area’s appeal. Burnham Market, often referred to as the “jewel of North Norfolk,” is a picturesque village centred around a green, featuring boutique shops, galleries, and cafés that attract visitors year-round.

The surrounding area is also part of the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, reflecting its national importance for landscape and conservation. This designation helps protect the region’s unique ecosystems, including its salt marshes, dunes, and coastal grasslands, ensuring they remain unspoilt for future generations.
