Living
Larksong is a detached holiday cottage near Eccles-on-Sea, sleeping five with a sandy Norfolk beach just five minutes away on foot. Look the other way, and the scene changes completely. Fields stretch towards Happisburgh, its lighthouse and church visible in the distance, and skylarks can often be heard overhead. They gave the bungalow its name. The same family has been coming here for more than 50 years, so Larksong feels less like a purpose-built holiday let and more like a home from home. There are two bedrooms – one double and a second with a double and single bed – plus a separate dining room and a kitchen stocked with the equipment needed for everyday cooking. But the conservatory/lounge is where the setting really registers. It faces the fields, opens onto the enclosed garden and catches the evening light. Some sunsets deserve your full attention.
The sea is close enough that the beach feels like part of every day, not a planned excursion. Go down for an early walk, return after breakfast, or take the longer route along the coast. Eccles is quieter than Norfolk's larger resorts, and there are miles of sand to explore, with Cart Gap, Walcott, Sea Palling, Waxham and Mundesley adding plenty of alternatives. Guests at Larksong have reported seeing seals from the local beach. Smallsticks Cafe at Cart Gap is roughly a 15 to 20-minute walk away, and Happisburgh Lighthouse gives another useful marker for exploring on foot. Prefer fields to shoreline? Public paths cross the surrounding countryside, with skylarks often audible above them, while the Weavers' Way provides a longer-distance route. Stalham, about five miles away, offers practicalities with supermarkets, a butcher, a Post Office, cafés and takeaways.
A few miles inland, Norfolk becomes a landscape of waterways, gardens and villages. East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden is around three miles from Larksong; you can explore the Broads by boat from Stalham, Hickling, Potter Heigham or Wroxham. Two very different heritage railways are within day-trip range too: the North Norfolk Railway links Sheringham and Holt, while the narrow-gauge Bure Valley Railway runs between Wroxham and Aylsham. Norwich brings a complete change of pace with its market, cathedrals, castle and historic streets. Or follow the coast north towards Cromer, Sheringham, Blakeney and Wells-next-the-Sea. You don't need to cover it all. A day can just as easily finish back at Larksong with the conservatory doors open, board games on the table and the last of the light dropping behind the fields.
