Grove Stables, dating back to 1840, this converted cart barn offers the ultimate country retreat for up to four guests. Tucked away on a country lane and nestled within attractive, park-like grounds, it is surrounded by ancient trees that offer seclusion and peace. Barn owls, deer, hares, pheasants and rabbits are all regular visitors to the owners’ three acres of grounds. The cottage itself is attached to the owners' house but has its own enclosed garden and a layout that feels distinctly separate. Its former life hasn't been polished away: beamed and vaulted ceilings remain in both bedrooms and the kitchen, while dual-aspect rooms pull in light from morning through to evening. Though fully equipped for a self-catering Norfolk holiday, there is a selection of pubs within a short drive away for times you don’t want to cook.
East Ruston is rural, but Grove Stables isn't cut off from the places people come to North Norfolk to see. East Ruston Old Vicarage Garden’s 30 acres have become one of the best-known gardens, with a tea room for a suitably unhurried finish. Walkers can head out through the surrounding countryside, explore East Ruston Poor's Allotment with its woodland and lake, or pick up longer routes such as the Weavers' Way. For supplies and places to eat, Stalham has a Tesco, butcher, Post Office, cafés, fish and chips and an Indian restaurant. The Ingham Swan and Smallburgh Crown are among the owners’ other local suggestions for eating out.
Then the landscape changes. Drive towards the coast for long sandy beaches at Cart Gap, Happisburgh, Sea Palling, Waxham and Mundesley, or head to Horsey for a walk with the chance of seeing seals. In the other direction are the Norfolk Broads, where you can hire boats from Stalham, Hickling, Potter Heigham and Wroxham. There are gardens at East Ruston, Hoveton Hall and How Hill, steam journeys on the Bure Valley and North Norfolk railways, and National Trust properties including Blickling and Felbrigg. Norwich is close enough for its market, cathedrals, castle and medieval streets, while Cromer, Sheringham and Holt extend the choice northwards. Grove Stables suits days that move between coast, countryside and Broads, but its strongest moments may be quieter ones: spotting a barn owl over the grounds, finding a hare on the lawn or simply taking a seat in the cottage garden when you get back.
