Penblaith Barn will have you swooning with delight. The luxurious barn conversion, which is Visit England 5 Star Gold rated and a 2014 award winner for 'Excellence in Self-catering, sleeps up to eighteen guests in eight bedrooms, has a state-of-the art Cinema Room with tiered seating, surround sound, access to Netflix, Sky, Sky Cinema and Sky Sports and is set in the stunning Hereford countryside with far reaching views towards the Cotswolds and stunning star-lit night skies. It’s the perfect self-catering property to gather the family or escape to with your friends for a relaxing holiday, special celebration, or just because you deserve a treat.
Sitting on the terrace, Penblaith Barn feels wonderfully rural and remote, yet the historic market town of Monmouth is only four miles away. Birthplace of Henry V and with one of the best examples of medieval bridges in the country, Monmouth has a long high street lined with excellent shops, pubs and cafes. Don’t miss a visit to Green & Jenks, a family-run ice cream parlour across the road from Shire Hall, where the homemade gelato is out of this world! Monmouth also has a castle, local museum and regimental museum!
Five miles from Penblaith Barn, Ross on Wye is another charming Herefordshire market town. The sight of the towering spire of St Mary’s, which has been a local landmark for 700 years, will let you know you’re getting close if you’re walking or cycling. As with Monmouth, Ross-on-Wye has a good variety of shops, cafes and pubs, a twice-weekly market (Thursday and Saturday) plus a farmer’s market on the first Friday of the month.
The history of the area is fascinating. Looking west towards Wales, there are more castles than you could comfortably visit in a week. Some of the best within a twenty minute drive include Goodrich, Raglan, Chepstow, Caldicot, Skenfrith and White Castles. Further afield, Caerphilly is around forty five minutes, not to forget Cardiff Castle in the heart of the Welsh capital, where you can see the original Roman walls on which the current fortress was built. Hereford Castle, one of the earliest constructed in England, sadly no longer exists, however the city’s beautiful cathedral is compensation.
If it is wonderful walks that you’re after, you’re certainly spoiled for choice. Penblaith is in the Wye Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with fantastic footpaths to suit all abilities. Symond’s Yat sits above the River Wye and is particularly spectacular in autumn, or you could try a stretch of Offa’s Dyke Path which runs for one hundred and seventy seven miles from Prestatyn in North Wales to Chepstow in the south. The Brecon Beacons National Park is just over the border, and there are more beautiful walks and cycling trails around Abergavenny, Crickhowell and Brecon, including up the Sugar Loaf and Pen y Fan mountains (walking only) and the Forest of Dean.
The owners of Penblaith have transformed an 18th Century barn into a luxurious 21st Century retreat you would never want to leave, if it wasn’t for the lure of the beautiful Herefordshire countryside with its lush green hills and valleys, rivers, golf courses, walking and cycling trails and wonderful towns and villages. It doesn’t matter how stressed you are when you set off for your holiday, you’ll start to relax as soon as you see Penblaith Barn and your holiday will only get better from there.
