About The Old Stables

The Old Stables is a former coach house newly transformed into a modern holiday cottage for families and friends, with space for six people to sleep in three very comfortable bedrooms. The location is perfect for a self-catering holiday with your family or friends. The house is set back from a residential street in Dumfries, a short walk from the historical Devorgilla Bridge that spans the River Nith, and close to shops, cafes, restaurants and bars like the very popular Globe Inn frequented by Scotland's favourite poet, Robert Burns.

The variety of sights and activities to suit all weathers and interests make Dumfries a brilliant holiday destination. Robert Burns lived in a simple house a short walk from The Old Stables. Now a museum dedicated to his life and work, Burns' house is almost a place of pilgrimage for Burns enthusiasts, who also spend time at the Robert Burns Centre. JM Barrie spent five years living in Dumfries and cited the gardens of Moat Brae as inspiration for some of the setting of Peter Pan.

Dumfries is the most significant town in the south-west of Scotland and has the amenities to prove it. There is an excellent range of places to eat, drink and shop, an ice-skating rink, a museum with the oldest working Camera Obscura, and historical sites like Linculden Abbey. Walk beside the River Nith to Doc Park, or head out of town for footpaths and cycling routes through Mabie Forest. Caervalock Castle is an unusual triangular moated castle eight miles south of the cottage, as is the romantic Sweetheart Abbey. Other local attractions include Gretna Gateway Outlet Village, Dalscone Fun Farm, and Drumlanrig Castle and country park.

Being Scotland, it's no surprise that the opportunities for golf and fishing are exceptional. The River Nith is renowned for the quality of its sea trout and salmon, and there are 20 named pools in the Dumfries area. There are three golf courses within a few miles of The Old Stables, with four more within a 30-minute radius.
