The Cow Shed is a beautifully converted former farm building at Hillcrest Farm in Frampton Mansell, a small Cotswold village surrounded by rolling countryside and intersected by quiet footpaths and lanes. It sleeps two guests in one bedroom, providing a peaceful escape for couples looking to slow the pace for a few days without feeling isolated from the world. The open-plan layout, private garden and countryside views create a relaxed atmosphere, while the location puts the local farm shop and The Crown Inn pub withing easy walking distance, and those who enjoy stretching their legs before lunch can follow local footpaths to The Bell at Sapperton or The Daneway Inn. Guests are also welcome to explore the farm's fifteen acres of paddocks, adding even more space to enjoy during a stay.
One of the joys of this part of Gloucestershire is that you never need to travel far to find something worth doing. Walkers can join the towpath of the Thames and Severn Canal, following peaceful routes through woodland, open countryside and traditional Cotswold villages. Stroud is about a 15 minutes drive and has earned a reputation as one of the most interesting market towns in the South West, with independent bookshops, cafés, galleries, and an award-winning farmers' market. Cirencester offers a different flavour of Cotswold life, with its handsome streets, Roman history and impressive parish church. Along the way, you'll discover farm shops, weekly markets, artisan bakeries and village pubs where well-worn boots are often more common than polished shoes.
The wider Cotswolds are equally tempting. Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Stow-on-the-Wold are all easy day trips, though some visitors find themselves preferring the quieter villages scattered between them. Westonbirt Arboretum is particularly beautiful in autumn, while the National Trust estate at Woodchester Park combines woodland walks with one of the region's most unusual unfinished Gothic mansions. History lovers can spend time exploring the Roman remains at Cirencester, while keen walkers have access to sections of the Cotswold Way and countless lesser-known routes across the surrounding hills. At the end of the day, however, the simple pleasure of returning to The Cow Shed, opening the garden gate and settling outside with a drink often proves just as appealing as any attraction on the map.
