About The Artist's House

The Artist's House is more than merely welcoming and comfortable. It is an inspiring space which will stoke your creativity, leaving you feeling rejuvenated and energised. It is one of two gorgeous cottages in the quirkily named Potato Town, owned by an artist and a furnituremaker who are keen to share this beautiful piece of the Oxfordshire countryside with groups of families and friends. There is space for eight people to sleep in four bedrooms, with the friendly Boxing Hare pub less than a five-minute walk away.

It's so easy to relax and unwind in Oxfordshire. At The Artist's House, you can put your stressful schedule aside, forget about deadlines and make the most of the wonderful countryside that is on the doorstep. It's wild enough to feel as if you have a proper escape yet is only five miles from the Cotswolds, 12 miles from the M40 and 20 miles from Oxford. Chic Londoners love to spend weekends here, which is why it was chosen as the location for the uber-stylish Soho Farmhouse.

The owners have lived here for over 23 years and are happy to provide advice to help visitors make the most of their stay. Start the day with a lazy breakfast (in bed with the papers - no one's going to judge you here) followed by a walk to the local pub for a G&T in the beer garden if it's warm or a big glass of red in front of the open fire in the winter. The local pubs around here are excellent, with seasonal menus full of flavoursome meals.

Those who love shopping will be excited by the proximity of Bicester Village, just half an hour's drive from the cottage. If designer handbags aren't your thing, then there are a wealth of independent antique and homeware boutiques in the surrounding towns and villages.

Day trips can include a visit to Blenheim Palace with a detour to St Martin's in Bladon to pay your respects at Winston Churchill's grave followed by a relaxed dinner in Woodstock. Hire a bike and take to the extensive network of cycle routes around the Cotswolds, or book a place on one of the area's many guided walking or cycling tours. Oxfordshire is renowned for the quality of its country pursuits, with seasonal fishing and shooting nearby.

The Artist's House is one of three superb properties in Potato Town, where the owners also run workshops and host exhibitions. Please see their website for more details.

Location (The Cotswolds)

Accommodation Comprises:

The Artist's House is a charming ironstone cottage extended and restored by the current owners to offer accommodation over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • Bi-fold doors at the back of the property take you into the spacious living room with the ground-floor bedroom beyond. Light floods the living room during the day thanks to the wall of glazed bi-fold doors that open onto the terrace. As with the rest of the house, the owners have used clean lines, soft shades and cosy textures to make it welcoming and homely and there is a projector and sound bar in the living room.
  • A glass door between the living room and kitchen/diner can be closed off to provide additional privacy to the ground floor bedroom of a night.
  • Creating a space both rustic and modern is no easy feat but the owners have pulled it off in the kitchen/diner by mixing wooden furniture and cabinets with neutral shades and sleek appliances. It's both beautiful and practical, and a room where people will happily spend time lingering over meals.
  • Beyond the stairs is the welcoming Snug, which can be used as an additional Smart TV room or a twin bedroom with pull-down Murphy beds, depending on your needs.
  • Ensuite bedroom with twin beds that can be set up either as two singles or one double. The ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin. There is hanging space and a full-length mirror, and plenty of room for two adults to share.
  • Utility room with laundry facilities and a cloakroom.

Upstairs:

  • Unlike downstairs, which is tiled with underfloor heating, the stairs are carpeted and the first floor has wooden floors painted in beautiful complimentary colours (upstairs also has underfloor heating).
  • Master bedroom with a super kingsized bed or twin single beds, hanging space and a desk made from a reclaimed pub table. The ensuite has a shower, WC and a handbasin.
  • Another twin/superking bedroom with hanging space and garden views.
  • Family bathroom with a deep freestanding bath, heated towel rail, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: The private garden is mainly lawn with colourful flower beds, and there is a covered patio with seating area providing a lovely place to sit whether the weather is sunny or inclement. The patio area has plenty of space for two families to eat together outside should you be holidaying with friends or family and also booking the owners other holiday home, Field End. A green lane passes outside the cottage, and there is ample off-street parking.

Additional Information: All utilities, organic cotton and French linen bedding and bath towels are provided. Please let the owner know your required bedroom layout when booking. Short breaks are possible, depending on availability. Smoking is not permitted. Dogs by arrangement.
