About Farthing Cottage

Farthing Cottage sleeps two guests and is an exceptionally pretty traditional Cotswolds stone holiday cottage which guests return back to time and time again because of its perfect location, cosy comfy decor and heaps of traditional character. Whether you want to eat out every night, enjoy a barbecue in the sunny garden or snuggle up in front of the flickering flames of the log burner, this is the ideal place!

The cottage has recently (2025-2026) undergone extensive refurbishment and provides the perfect bolt-hole for couples looking for a short break or longer holiday. Sitting in an enviable position in a quiet spot, the cottage is just a short stroll (apx two minutes) from the popular historic market square of Stow-on-the-Wold. Enjoy everything Stow has to offer within strolling distance including excellent gastro-pubs, traditional inns, restaurants, cafes, art galleries and independent boutiques and shops (including a butchers, bakers, cheese shop, wine merchants, chemist and grocery stores for stocking up on local produce).

Dating back some two hundred years, Farthing Cottage oozes traditional character with beams on the ceiling, an original Cotswolds stone floor, stone walls and a fireplace housing a log burner which makes it perfect for a winter break. Following the recent refurbishment, the character and charm of the cottage have been beautifully preserved and complemented by a fabulous bespoke hand-painted kitchen, well equipped with integrated AEG and Bosch appliances underneath quartz worktops. As part of the refurbishment, a compact pretty ensuite shower room with WC and vanity basin has been added to the upstairs bedroom with a king-size bed with lovely cream iron headboard. There is also a cloakroom off the sunroom downstairs with additional WC and wash basin. Traditional fabrics (including some by local designer Sam Wilson), antique pine furniture, and modern facilities (including a Smart TV with Sonos Beam sound bar, WiFi, slimline dishwasher, washer/dryer and Nespresso coffee machine) all add to the cottage's appeal and guests comforts.

Farthing Cottage affords off-road parking for one car (or two at a squeeze) at the front, from where you walk through the pretty garden to the front door. A real sun trap during the warmer months, the garden provides a lovely place to relax when you fancy a day off sight-seeing with wooden steamers (during the summer months), bistro table with chairs, sun umbrella and Weber charcoal BBQ (charcoal not provided but can be purchased at the nearby Tesco). The local shops within walking distance provide everything needed for a romantic candlelit supper or BBQ for alfresco dining!

Perfect for couples, Farthing Cottage is ideal for those who want a romantic and relaxing holiday and also ideal for those wishing to explore the many delights of the Cotswolds. Within easy reach by car, you can explore Burford, Chipping Campden, Moreton in Marsh and Broadway or drive a little further for a day-out at Stratford-upon-Avon, Cheltenham (with its famous race course), Woodstock (home of Blenheim Palace), Warwick Castle or even the historic cities of Bath and Oxford - the choices of places to visit are endless. There are also some wonderful walks through glorious rolling countryside to pretty Cotswolds villages with pubs from the front door like The Slaughters, Oddington, Bleddington and even Bourton-on-the-Water and Hawkstone Brewery (if the walk back is too much, take the bus!).

Being in the very heart of one of the most desirable historic towns in the Cotswold's, with so much to see and do all around, makes Farthing Cottage an excellent choice whether you just want to tuck yourself away for a few romantic nights of relaxation or get out and about exploring this beautiful part of Central England.

Short breaks available outside of peak times or at short notice in peak if available (three night minimum).

Location (The Cotswolds)

The owners use this much loved cottage for holidays themselves, so you will find it well-equipped with everything needed for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

Accommodation comprises:

Ground floor

  • You enter Farthing Cottage via the light and airy sun room with dining table and chairs - the perfect place to enjoy breakfast or supper with windows and door that overlooks the pretty garden.
  • This room leads into a cosy yet good-sized living area which has a magical atmosphere with lots of character features including a beamed ceiling, original Cotswold stone floor and exposed stone walls (keeping it cool in the summer months). Snuggle up together on the sofa and watch a movie in front of the 32 inch Smart TV (with Sonos Beam soundbar) whilst enjoying the flickering flames of the log burner in the original stone fireplace - just perfect at the end of a fun-filled day exploring the Cotswolds. There is a flat-panel bluetooth hi-fi for listening to music.
  • The spacious newly fitted hand-painted kitchen with AEG and Bosch appliances is at the rear of the living area/cottage and is well equipped with everything needed to cater for a light snack through to a lavish Christmas dinner! Facilities include an integrated slimline dishwasher, built-in single oven, induction hob (with extractor over), integrated fridge with ice box and integrated washer/dryer.
  • Cloakroom - There is a small cloakroom off the sun room with WC, small wash basin and cupboards (one housing the boiler).

First floor

  • The bedroom with king-size bed is located upstairs and affords a lovely aspect looking out over the garden. The window lets the sun flood in first thing in the morning - lay in bed with your morning tea enjoying the morning rays. With lots of character the vaulted beamed ceiling provides a nice sense of space. There is a chest of drawers and hanging space for clothes.
  • Off the bedroom is a compact pretty ensuite with pentagonal shower cubicle, WC, vanity basin and heated towel rail.

Outside: A rarity in Stow, Farthing Cottage affords off-road parking to the front of the property for one vehicle (or two at a squeeze if parked carefully). A gate takes you through into the garden with borders for flowers and herbs and seating areas for the bistro table and chairs, and wooden steamers for lounging (available during the summer months). A Weber charcoal BBQ is also provided (charcoal can be purchased locally). The garden enjoys a fair amount of sunshine and is a lovely place to relax with an alfresco glass or meal at the end of a fun-packed day.

Additional information: Prices include central heating, in-house electricity, towels (one hand and one bath per person) and bed linen. The cottage is fitted with WiFi. Sorry but no pets and strictly no smoking. The cottage sleeps two and is not suitable for children. Please note that due to the age and nature of the electricity supply it is not possible to charge electric vehicles at Farthing Cottage but EV charging is available at the local Tesco supermarket which is a 5 minute walk / 2 minute drive.

Access by public transport: It is possible to travel to Stow via public transport. Trains regularly run from London Paddington to Kingham or Moreton-in-Marsh stations where you can pick up taxi (it is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from Moreton to Stow). There are plenty of lovely shops in Stow where you can buy local produce and also a supermarket within walking distance. With a great selection of pubs and restaurants, lovely walks and a local bus service, this is an enjoyable holiday destination with or without a car.

Whether you are looking for a summer or winter break, Farthing Cottage is the perfect place to stay in the heart of the Cotswolds.
