Arlington House is, in the words of Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way, although even Poppins would struggle to find fault with this gorgeous stone cottage in the most desirable village in the Cotswolds. With space for six guests to sleep in three bedrooms, Arlington House is within walking distance of the River Eye and the Slaughters Country Inn Pub and Restaurant.
The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is incredibly pretty with lush countryside and charming towns and villages. Buildings made from local Cotswold stone line original streets, the layout of which dates back centuries. Lower Slaughter is a small collection of charming period cottages, of which Arlington House is one. Two small stone bridges span the river, and there are photo opportunities at every turn. Not even Hollywood could dream up a place as lovely as this!
One of the loveliest ways to experience the beauty of the Slaughters is with a relaxing stroll from the cottage past The Church of St Mary the Virgin (which has medieval origins) alongside the river, past Lower Slaughter Manor, before reaching Upper Slaughter. One of the highlights of staying at Arlington House is that you can leave the village to tourists during the day while you go out and explore, returning in the evening when it is quiet and peaceful.
Some favourite Cotswold towns to see include Chipping Campden, Stow-on-the-Wold (walk there across the fields!), where the market square has been a place to buy and sell for centuries, and Bourton-on-the Water (again within walking distance) which is home to the Model Village, the Cotswolds Motor Museum, Birdland and the Dragonfly Maze. Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park and the Cotswolds Wildlife Park for the more exotic varieties are always a hit with younger guests, while adults may enjoy a tour of the Cotswold Brewery. Don't miss the yew trees at St Edward's Church in Stow, which are so old that they have grown to become part of the fabric of the medieval church.
The Cotswolds is a beautiful place to visit regardless of whether you are escaping for a romantic weekend or taking the family for a week of discovery and fun. There is miles of countryside to walk and cycle through, tea rooms and antique shops, National Trust properties and quirky landmarks that make this area one of Britain's favourite holiday destinations.
