Sycamore Lodge is in a beautiful setting on a small holding in the Wiltshire countryside, close to both the Cotswolds and the North Wessex Downs. The lodge is located amongst twenty acres of grounds, fields, and woods and nestles alongside our privately owned twelve acre ancient woodland, Chittoe Heath Plantation, to which guests have access. Sycamore is one of four traditional timber lodges on a family-run smallholding where the owners raise rare-breed poultry and run an international horse eventing yard. The lodge sleeps up to seven guests in three bedrooms with lots of space indoors and out, making it ideal for families and friends for a self-catering holiday at any time of the year.
Although the cottage feels rural and remote, it is only a 15-minute drive from the pretty market town of Devizes where the weekly market on a Thursday has run here since 1141, and it's an excellent place to have a chat to local producers when you pick up meat, fish, cheese, vegetables, bread and other goodies. Chippenham is also an attractive market town where guests can eat, drink and shop to their heart's content, especially if they visit on Friday or Saturday when the regular market is on. Both towns are also great for sightseeing. Devizes has a Norman castle, museum and brewery, and is home to the Caen Hill Locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Chippenham sits beside the River Avon and has a vibrant nightlife as well as beautiful parks and riverside walks. The Wiltshire market towns of Melksham and Calne are also a ten minute drive away.
Local attractions include Lacock, a picturesque stone village and abbey in the care of the National Trust. Also nearby are the thatched hamlet of Sandy Lane with its historic coaching inn, the villages of Biddestone, Castle Combe and its famous racetrack and Badminton Park (and International Horse Trials) are within easy reach. Longleat House and Safari Park is within a short drive and many guests use Wayside as a base both to visit Longleat and explore the local countryside.
Closer to home, guests can step outside the lodge for a myriad of beautiful footpaths leading to beauty spots like the Pondmoor Woods, the village of Bromham and the Roundway Hills. The North Wiltshire Cycleway is only a mile from the lodge, while the Wiltshire Downs are just two miles from the door.
Day trips can include sightseeing and shopping in the ancient city of Bath, with some of the most spectacular Georgian buildings in the country as well as the historic Roman baths. Bristol is also within reach, with its colourful harbour and award-winning zoo, and there are country houses such as Bowood to see.
Sycamore Lodge is a fantastic wonderful holiday destination not only for its beautiful location but also because it's so easy to reach. In less than two hours from west London or the Midlands, you can be relaxing in these peaceful surroundings with nothing louder than the occasional cluck of a chicken to disturb you.
Sycamore Lodge can be booked on its own or together with the other lodges (sleeping 2-6 guests) to accommodate extended families or groups of friends. The owner also offers B&B accommodation. Please see their website for more details.
