Dairy Cottage is an exceptional rural retreat in the heart of the Wiltshire village of Upper Chute. Converted from a traditional farm building with an old brick and flint exterior, its charm and authenticity have been carefully preserved whilst providing a stylish contemporary interior with an eye for detail and comfort. The cottage, which sleeps four people, is ideal for couples, families with older children (16+) or friends looking for a very special location with all the comforts of home.
Upper Chute, situated within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is surrounded by scenic and unspoilt countryside. The village is very quiet and Dairy Cottage is set well back from the lane and close to the Church. There are many walks from the village on footpaths and bridleways including ten circular walks from the cottage door. A few of these have a country pub along the route enabling you to explore and enjoy the beauty of this corner of rural Wiltshire at all times of the year. The walk through Collingbourne Woods is about three miles long and there is a longer loop which takes in Ludgershall Castle.
Further afield is the World Heritage site of Stonehenge where you can book a Stone Circle Experience to make your visit more memorable. The lesser-known but impressive Stone Circle at Avebury is also a World Heritage site and is well worth visiting. Highclere Castle, the home of the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon and the setting for the renowned TV drama series Downton Abbey, is about 30 minutes from the Cottage. It has an impressive collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts and treasures in an exhibition dedicated to Lord Carnarvon’s discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. Salisbury and its magnificent medieval Cathedral which has the tallest spire in England is about half an hour away. The Cathedral Green is delightful and the city has many interesting Independent shops and restaurants. Salisbury Racecourse has a number of well attended race meetings. Winchester is also within 30 minutes’ drive and its Cathedral is a must-see. It has witnessed the coronation of several medieval Kings of England and contains the tomb of Jane Austen whose novels have endured for over 250 years. Newbury Racecourse, which has a spectacular new grandstand, has a calendar of many high profile race meetings and is about 45 minutes away by car.
Closer to the Cottage is the old market town of Marlborough which has the widest high street in England and is well known for its many interesting and varied shops, restaurants and cafes. Hungerford which is 20 minutes away has a number of excellent antique shops and two high end clothes shops. The historic Kennet and Avon Canal with its colourful barges on moorings passes through the town. On the practical side, the nearest supermarkets are in Andover (15 minutes) and Hungerford which has a good butcher in the High Street and an excellent farm shop, Cobbs, one mile west of the town. Ludgershall (10 minutes) away has a small supermarket, a butcher and an impressive deli (Gastro Nicks) a couple of miles away.
