Rays Farm Cottage is the perfect country idyll. Softly weathered red brick walls are adorned with climbing roses - there is even a white picket gate. Gardens lead into the fields and woodland of the South Downs National Park - you will fall in love before you even reach the front door! Step across the threshold and the love affair continues as you are embraced in a sense of warmth and welcome that only exists in homes which have happily hosted guests for centuries. The cottage is on a quiet lane in the peaceful village of Upham, within walking distance of the Brushmakers Arms pub. It sleeps four people in two bedrooms so it is ideal for couples or small families, especially with the delights of Winchester being a mere 20 minute drive away.
Upham is a pretty village with a small, friendly community. It is popular with visitors not only for its two pubs and picturesque location but also because of the footpaths, bridleways and country lanes that offer miles of beautiful scenery. The long-distance South Downs Way is less than ten minutes from the cottage and is especially popular with walkers and cyclists because even covering a short stretch of the 100-mile trail is a treat. Even closer to the cottage is the Pilgrims Way footpath that runs between Winchester and Canterbury.
Winchester is one of Britain's most ancient cities, crowned with a stunning cathedral that has stood proudly for more than 1,000 years at the heart of city life and boasts the longest medieval nave in Britain. The city was the seat of the kings of Wessex and Winchester and, although the castle built by William the Conqueror no longer stands, you can still see the Great Hall that houses a magnificent round table commissioned by Henry VIII in the style of King Arthur's legendary table. Winchester is both ancient and modern, with its cathedral and college happily sitting next to a thriving farmers' market and independent shops, theatres and entertainment, and a wealth of fantastic places to eat and drink.
Rays Farm Cottage is the ideal holiday destination whether you are escaping for a romantic weekend or staying for longer. Within half an hour you can reach popular attractions that include Marwell Wildlife Park, the Royal Armouries Museum, historic Portsmouth docks, the ruins of Bishops Waltham Palace, Paultons Park and Peppa Pig World, and the Blue Reef Aquarium. There are miles of footpaths offering beautiful walks at any time of the year and with the comfort of the cottage waiting to greet you at the end of a fun-packed day, your holiday will be complete.
