Chestnut Lodge is a beautiful timber holiday cottage in the Sussex village of Halnaker. It has a lovely, leafy outlook, and the South Downs National Park is just over the garden fence. The cottage sleeps four people in two bedrooms, with a flexible layout to suit the needs of couples, families or friends. It has been designed with wide doorways, level flooring throughout, and a wheelchair accessible bathroom, and is sited in its own grounds, with parking space for four cars and an EV charger. It is well-equipped for self-catering, and essentials and treats are readily accessible in the well-stocked village shop and at an organic farm shop. You're also within a short strolling distance of the popular village pub, The Anglesey Arms, with it’s selection of ales, and reputation for good food.
With the National Park on your doorstep, there is a superb choice of activities and places to visit locally. Walk or drive into the National Park, a unique and beautiful area of chalk downland and woods, with a vast network of footpaths and mountain bike trails, picturesque villages, country pubs and abundant wildlife. Halnaker (pronounced Ha-naker) is known locally for its windmill and the lovely walk along the holloway to reach it. A holloway is a footpath worn away by centuries of footsteps to create a sunken trail. Mature trees line Mill Lane to create a delightful "tunnel" that looks glorious in all seasons. Walking from the cottage to the windmill takes around half an hour, though it's worth stopping and admiring the views. In the opposite direction, footpaths to neighbouring Boxgrove village pass through the Tinwood vinyard, where daily tours are available.
The Roman city of Chichester is four miles south of Chestnut Lodge and is served by a regular bus service. It is a vibrant place to visit with many shops, eateries, a 600-year-old cathedral, and a magnificent Roman palace. Chichester harbour is popular for kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing, and you're close to Bognor Regis and West Wittering's sandy Blue Flag Beach. Other local attractions include Goodwood (renowned for Festival of Speed and Revival motor meetings and horse racing), the National Trust houses Uppark and Petworth, the 40-acre Weald and Downland open-air museum, and Arundel Castle. You're also within reach of Portsmouth's historic dockyard, where the pride and joy of Henry VIII, the Mary Rose, sits beside Nelson's HMS Victory.
You can stay at Chestnut Lodge any time of the year, with short breaks and longer holidays possible depending on availability.
