Once owned by the Stewarts of Grantully, Garden Cottage and its Bothy were the walled garden for the Castle, producing fruit and vegetables for the estate up until 1945. Sadly the massive old greenhouses have gone, but the garden remains. Set in three acres, all of which you are more than welcome to explore, the Bothy is more than just a cottage. Behind the Bothy is our main garden, where we grow mainly fruit and vegetables for our table. We have planted an orchard with some 60 trees and many soft fruits in various stages of growth - Right at the top we have built a shepherd's hut complete with outdoor games area. We are constantly adding to the trees and plants to add to the attraction of this unique place. The best views are from the top garden, which is where the sun lingers most. Finally, there is an acre or so of meadow to the east where we are in the process of planting more trees to make a woodland - this is a good place for picnics in the summer.
This part of the upper Tay valley is well known for all sorts of active sports, kayaking and watersports from Aberfeldy, canyoning and similar activities based in Ballinlluig, fishing, and all grades of walking in the Lawers range just a few miles west and around Schiehallion to the north. Somewhat less strenuous is the Birks of Aberfeldy and the beautiful Cluny Gardens, just over the Tay from us. If that sounds a bit too much, then there are some splendid cafes and restaurants all within very easy reach in Aberfeldy itself, at Grandtully and at Weem.
Further afield, but still close for a days outing, are Kenmore and Loch Tay, Dunkeld, Pitlochry, Blairgowrie, Blair Atholl and of course Perth itself. The Bothy at Garden Cottage is well placed for access to all that Highland Perthshire offers.
