Hummingbird Cottage is a charming escape for couples, independent travellers and groups of four, right in the heart of Buxton. The location is perfect for those who want a holiday in the countryside without sacrificing the convenience of being close to cafes, shops, and pubs like Red Willow, all of which are within a short stroll. With the Peak District National Park on the doorstep and a myriad of fantastic walks and bike rides within easy reach, you have everything you need for a memorable stay.
Buxton may be close to some of the most spectacular countryside in England, but it is far from a rural backwater. The healing properties of the area's natural mineral water have drawn visitors here for millennia. While the current baths date from the 1850s, their roots are Roman. The town's architecture is very similar to the famous town of Bath in Somerset, with elegant Georgian buildings and a sweeping Grade-I Listed crescent that is now a spa hotel where you can book treatments and "take the waters".
The best way to enjoy Buxton's architecture is on the self-guided Buxton Town Walk, which starts at the Pavillion Gardens and passes the Opera House, The Crescent and Poole's Cavern. Browse the boutiques in Cavendish Arcade, built on the site of some of the Georgian baths where original Minton tiles and a plunge pool remain visible, or make your way to Higher Buxton for a wider array of independent retailers. Spring Gardens has a choice of familiar high street names, and the Pavilion Gardens frequently hosts specialist markets and fairs that include a twice-weekly market every Tuesday and Saturday.
It's always a fantastic time to visit the Peak District. Buxton is the highest town in England and enjoys breathtaking panoramic views. Walking and cycling are two of the more popular ways to enjoy the beauty of the landscape with nearby footpaths leading to places like Solomon's Temple, Goyt Valley, Serpentine Walks, and through Woodland. Treak Cliff Cavern and the Hope Valley are about 10 miles away, and with the entire national park waiting for you to explore, you'll never run out of choice.
Local attractions include the charming town of Bakewell which holds the biggest market in the Peak District every Monday. Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall are always worth a visit, while Poole Cavern's make a great all-weather attraction. Alton Towers is about half an hour from the cottage, as are Matlock and Matlock Bath. There is something for everyone in the Peak District, with Hummingbird Cottage being a delightful retreat in the heart of it all.
