Herdwick Barn is one of two welcoming holiday cottages at Highfields Farm, where the owners care for their small flock of Herdwick sheep. It's ideal for couples or families on holiday in the Peak District National Park, sleeping four people in two bedrooms with a family bathroom. When the owners converted the stone milking parlour into holiday accommodation, they made sure to retain the original beauty and character of the barn, which has been a part of the rural landscape of the Peak District for centuries. As a result, it's incredibly peaceful and scenic, with views over the farmland and surrounding countryside.
It doesn't matter what the weather is like. You'll love opening the shutters onto the view from Herdwick Barn every morning. As the farm is at the end of a mile-long country track, (please note, not suitable for very low-slung vehicles). There is no passing traffic to disturb your sleep. Instead, you'll wake refreshed, revitalised, and raring to get out and explore the stunning landscape. You don't have to be a hardened hiker to enjoy the peace and solitude of walking through the countryside to The Roaches or through the Manifold Valley. The Tissington Trail and Monsal Trail are also nearby. There's a wide variety of fantastic footpaths and mountain bike trails to help you explore, with the owner thoughtfully providing maps and information about the local area to help you plan your days to perfection. Carsington Water, Tittesworth Reservoir, and Rudyard Lake are all within easy reach for fishing, watersports, cycling, walking and bird watching.
Day trips can be spent exploring the elegant spa town of Buxton, with its upmarket boutiques and eateries, or grabbing a bargain or two at Bakewell's busy Monday market, where over 100 traders sell locally produced food and drink, collectables, housewares, and virtually everything else you could need. Bakewell is only a few miles from Chatsworth House, whose opulence is breathtaking both inside and out. There aren't many family homes with gilded window frames! Alton Towers is only 20 minutes from Herdwick Barn, with other local attractions including Biddulph Grange Gardens, Calke Abbey, and the Heights of Abraham. There's no shortage of all-weather attractions, either. It doesn't rain underground, so save a wet day to explore cave systems like Blue John, Speedwell and Treak Cliff.
Herdwick Barn is one of two superb holiday cottages on the 40-acre Highfields Farm. It's available for bookings all year round. Minimum stay is 3 nights.
