About Columbine

Columbine Cottage is a wonderful antidote to a busy, stressful life where you feel like you never have enough time to spend with the people you love. The 4-Star Gold award winning cottage has room for six guests in three bedrooms and enjoys a peaceful location in a friendly village, close to the Peak District National Park and popular Derbyshire attractions including Chatsworth House and Chesterfield.

One of the many benefits of Columbine is the variety of walks leading from the front door. A 10-15 minute walk leads to Fabrick Rock with views of the Derbyshire countryside and, on a clear day, five other counties. Follow the path for another half a mile to reach Ashover village with its 15th Century church and three local pubs, including the Black Swan which is said to be haunted by a laughing Cavalier and an unknown woman. The local council has made an audio-guided walking tour of the village sights and history. Ogston Reservoir, home to one of the largest bird watching clubs in Britain, is nearby, or take the stone path from behind the Old Poets Corner pub and walk through Ravensnest Wood in a circular route around the village that passes the home of the renowned botanist Sir Joseph Banks.

Road cyclists and mountain bikers will not be disappointed with the wealth of routes to ride, while the riding school in the village can help you brush up on your cross-country skills with a countryside hack.

Within a 15-minute drive of the cottage, you can be marvelling at the magnificence of Chatsworth House, the family seat of the Dukes of Devonshire and inspiration for Pemberley in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Chatsworth’s opulent interior, stunning gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown, restaurants, farmyard and shop make it a must-see when you are in this part of Derbyshire.

Also within 15-minutes is Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham Cable Car, the lovely town of Chesterfield, Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall and Crich Tramway Village. Bakewell, Buxton and a myriad of other charming towns and villages are within a 20-mile radius, making Columbine perfect for exploring the best of Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park.

Columbine Cottage is a welcoming home-away-from-home in a fantastic location that is peaceful without being remote. With its sunny private garden and open fire, it is an ideal base all year round.

Accommodation Comprises:

Columbine's traditional cottage layout has been extended and modernised to retain its original charm while updating its features to suit 21st Century living. It is decorated and furnished to a high standard, with thoughtful touches including a welcome basket of logs for the fire, and eco-friendly luxury toiletries.

Downstairs:

  • The spacious sitting room is the perfect place to relax. Large sofas face an open fire, and the owners have provided a selection of books and games if you do not feel like watching television or a film. A glass door opens onto the garden, allowing lots of natural light to flood into the room.
  • A separate dining room, with table and chairs for six people, adjoins the kitchen. A highchair can be provided if required.
  • The fitted kitchen is a recent addition to the cottage. It includes everything you need for self-catering including a dishwasher, microwave, fridge/freezer, electric oven and stove. There is also a washing machine, tumble drier and ironing board for guest use.

Upstairs:

Stairs lead to a landing and hallway, off which leads three bedrooms and a family bathroom on the first floor.

  • The master bedroom has a double bed, bedside tables with reading lights and a walk-in wardrobe with plenty of storage space for clothes.
  • Two twin bedrooms are at the rear of the cottage, overlooking the garden. Both have two single beds and are decorated in a neutral style that is appropriate for adults or children.
  • The spacious family bathroom has a bath, separate walk-in shower cubicle, WC and 'his and hers' wash basins.

Outside: The garden is mainly lawn with a border of mature shrubs and flowers. On the patio there is teak garden furniture and a barbecue for relaxed meals in the summer. There is also a shed which can be used for bike storage. We provide guest parking for two cars, one space on the private lane outside the cottage and the other off-street a few yards away.

Additional Information: Columbine Cottage has WiFi and central heating throughout. All utilities, linen and towels are included. No smoking. No pets. Columbine can be booked with adjoining Foxglove Cottage to accommodate larger groups of up to ten guests - a popular choice for two families wanting to holiday together whilst enjoying plenty of personal space. Travel cot available on request at no extra charge. The changeover day is Saturday during July and August and normally a Friday at all other times of the year (the owners will try to be flexible where possible). Short breaks available and normally start on a Friday or Monday.
