Columbine Cottage is a wonderful antidote to a busy, stressful life where you feel like you never have enough time to spend with the people you love. The cottage has room for six guests in three bedrooms and enjoys a peaceful location in a friendly village, close to the Peak District National Park and popular Derbyshire attractions including Chatsworth House and Chesterfield.
One of the many benefits of Columbine is the variety of walks leading from the front door. A 10-15 minute walk leads to Fabrick Rock with views of the Derbyshire countryside and, on a clear day, five other counties. Follow the path for another half a mile to reach Ashover village with its 15th Century church and three local pubs, including the Black Swan which is said to be haunted by a laughing Cavalier and an unknown woman. The local council has made an audio-guided walking tour of the village sights and history. Ogston Reservoir, home to one of the largest bird watching clubs in Britain, is nearby, or take the stone path from behind the Old Poets Corner pub and walk through Ravensnest Wood in a circular route around the village that passes the home of the renowned botanist Sir Joseph Banks.
Road cyclists and mountain bikers will not be disappointed with the wealth of routes to ride, while the riding school in the village can help you brush up on your cross-country skills with a countryside hack.
Within a 15-minute drive of the cottage, you can be marvelling at the magnificence of Chatsworth House, the family seat of the Dukes of Devonshire and inspiration for Pemberley in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Chatsworth’s opulent interior, stunning gardens and parkland designed by Capability Brown, restaurants, farmyard and shop make it a must-see when you are in this part of Derbyshire.
Also within 15-minutes is Matlock Bath and the Heights of Abraham Cable Car, the lovely town of Chesterfield, Hardwick Hall, Haddon Hall and Crich Tramway Village. Bakewell, Buxton and a myriad of other charming towns and villages are within a 20-mile radius, making Columbine perfect for exploring the best of Derbyshire and the Peak District National Park.
Columbine Cottage is a welcoming home-away-from-home in a fantastic location that is peaceful without being remote. With its sunny private garden it is an ideal base all year round.
