About Catherine Cottage

Catherine Cottage has everything you're looking for in a Peak District holiday cottage. Built from locally quarried honey-coloured stone, the welcoming property is in the picturesque village of Ashford-in-the-Water, barely 100 metres from the beautiful River Wye and a short stroll from the friendly Bulls Head pub. The cottage sleeps four people in two bedrooms, with space for a well-behaved dog. There's nowhere quite like the Peak District National Park. It's a beautiful mix of stunning walks, characterful villages and elegant towns, and some of the finest stately homes in England. It's irresistible in every season.

Ashford-in-the-Water is a lovely village with lots to offer visitors. Wander beside the river to the medieval Sheepwash Bridge, which Visit England awarded the prestigious accolade of being the best bridge in England for playing Pooh Sticks. Stop by Holy Trinity Church for the impressive stained-glass windows and examples of the black marble for which the village was once famous. You can walk from the cottage to the village shop well stocked with all the essentials plus a good choice of local delicacies. Stop by the tea room for freshly made sandwiches to take on a walk or bike ride along the Monsal Trail, or climb Monsal Head for a picnic with a view. The Peak District's other favourite walking and cycling destinations include Kinder Scout, Dovedale, and Mam Tor.

Bakewell is only a mile and a half down river from Ashford-in-the-Water. It's a lively country town with a busy Monday market and a great choice of independent shops and places to eat. Alternatively, drive ten miles in the other direction to reach beautiful Buxton, where the architecture reflects the efforts of the fifth Duke of Devonshire to create a spa town to rival Bath. Local attractions include Poole's Cavern and Buxton Country Park, magnificent Chatsworth House, National Trust Lyme, the Heights of Abraham, Crich Tramway Village, and Alton Towers. Other places to visit are Matlock and Matlock Spa, and dozens of gorgeous villages including the historic plague village of Eyam.

Catherine Cottage is wonderfully welcoming in all seasons. It has been beautifully renovated to provide a high standard of accommodation that blends 21st Century comforts with original period character.

Location (The Peak District)

Accommodation Comprises:

Catherine Cottage is a charming period property with roots going back to medieval times. The owners have sympathetically updated the accommodation, which is over two levels.

Downstairs:

  • You'll feel welcome as soon as you open the door into the entrance hall, where there is room to hang coats and leave your walking boots.
  • Light the fire in the sitting room and snuggle down to watch TV, play a game or read. The soft gritstone fireplace and ancient oak beams are attractive features, while the handmade glass panes in the window also testify to the cottage's age.
  • Modern appliances sit comfortably in the traditional county kitchen/diner, where the solid pine table has room for six hungry people if you have friends over for dinner. The kitchen door opens to the rear covered yard (handy for bikes and cleaning boots), so there is lots of natural light.
  • Convenient cloakroom with a WC and a handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Sleep soundly in the master bedroom's king-sized bed. The room has far-reaching views of the hills beyond the village, inspiring your day's walking as soon as you wake up. There's proper storage in an antique sandalwood wardrobe and drawers.
  • Two full-sized single beds furnish the second bedroom at the rear of the cottage and overlook neighbouring gardens. All beds are made up using quality linen. Bath towels are provided.
  • Modern family bathroom with a heated towel rail, shower over the bath, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: A covered yard provides storage space for bicycles. There is free parking on the street outside the cottage.

Additional Information: A full information pack with user manuals, suggestions for your leisure time and favourite local outings is provided. There is also a large cupboard containing maps, hiking guides, books, board games, and DVDs for your use. Freesat TV (100+ channels), superfast broadband with WiFi, the first basket of logs for the burner, bed linen and bath towels are all included. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome to stay (downstairs and off the furniture please). Smoking is not permitted.
