5 River Walk is a delightful holiday home in the Peak District town of Matlock. It is just across the road from the River Derwent, no more than a five-minute stroll from the town centre's supermarkets, shops, cafes and friendly pubs that include the uniquely named Remarkable Hare. The cottage is perfect for a self-catering holiday with friends and family, including children and dogs, as it sleeps eight people in four bedrooms with a courtyard garden and off-street parking. There are lovely walks from the door, excellent transport links, and the beautiful Peak District and Derbyshire landscape to explore.
Matlock has an industrial heritage and a cosmopolitan vibe. The River Derwent powered the Industrial Revolution, with mills harnessing the flow of the water to create the cotton that clothed the nation. Wander two miles along the river to the Arkwright Cromford Mill to see the world's first water-powered mill and learn about the people and industry that put Matlock on the map. A savvy entrepreneur, John Smedley, used water to turn Matlock and neighbouring Matlock Spa into a fashionable tourist destinations in the 19th Century. His family mill still operates, and you can see his private home, Riber Castle, commanding beautiful views over the town. Matlock has a great choice of independent shops, bars and restaurants and a twice-weekly market on Tuesdays and Fridays. On weekends from mid-September to the end of October, the river is a focal point for the famous Matlock Illuminations, culminating in a fireworks spectacular on the last weekend.
You'll never run out of ways to have fun when you stay at 5 River Walk. The Derwent Valley and Peak District are a magnet for people who love being outdoors and active. Whether you're a walker, a hiker, a rambler or a meanderer, there's a route to suit. There are miles of wilderness just outside of town or take advantage of Hall Leys Park and four other gorgeous parks along the two-mile stretch of river between Matlock and Matlock Spa. Mountain biking and horse riding are also popular, as is fishing in the river or at local fishing ponds.
Local attractions include the Heights of Abraham, open-air Crich Tramway Museum, Peak District Mining Museum, and Gulliver's Kingdom. You're only eight miles from Bakewell and Chatsworth House, half an hour from Buxton, and 40 minutes from Alton Towers. Whatever the season and your interest, Matlock sits at the centre of everything you could want.
