The Old School House is a beautifully converted self-catering cottage in Northumberland. With thick stone walls, loads of period charm, and space for four people to sleep in two bedrooms, it's a welcoming base for couples and families who love being surrounded by the stunning landscape of the Northumberland National Park. It's difficult to imagine that this hand-built property once rang with the shouts and laughter of school children as today it is blissfully tranquil. The Redesdale Arms near Rochester is about a ten minute drive and serves excellent food if you would like a rest from cooking.
Those in the know appreciate that this region is one of the best in the north for walking and cycling. You can join the Pennine Way from the gate, walking towards Byrness Hill towards Chew Green, stopping to admire the panoramic views of the Border Ridge and Catcleugh Reservoir. The cottage is surrounded by spectacular countryside with gentle riverside walks and trails. With the national park on one side and Whitelee Moor and Kilderhead nature reserves on the other, you have endless miles of footpaths, mountain bike friendly bridleways, and cycling routes to help you explore. Other walking destinations include Redesdale, Simonsides, the Cheviot Hills, the Otterburn Ranges, and the glorious Scottish Borders. The cottage has a covered area to store bikes if you bring yours with you, with bike hire available in Kielder if you don't.
Hadrian's Wall, Cragside, Wallington and Traquair House are some of many local attractions. You can also visit the house in Jedburgh where Mary Queen of Scots stayed in 1566, which is now a visitor centre dedicated to her life. Alnwick's castle and gardens are always a lovely day out, as are Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. The Old School House is 45 minutes from Kielder Water, where you can enjoy various water sports, go fishing, or take a sightseeing ferry trip. There are two golf courses within a 30-minute radius, local horse riding stables, and quad biking tours.
The Old School House is available for holiday bookings all year round. It has large mature gardens in which to relax and stargaze, and a log burner with unlimited firewood as well as central heating provided by an oil-fired Rayburn to keep you snug and cosy in winter.
