About Helmsdale

Helmsdale certainly has the wow factor! This spacious holiday home delivers everything visitors love about the New Forest, including peaceful surroundings, lots of space, and authentic chocolate box charm. The three-bedroom property is only a short walk from Burley village centre, making shops, cafes, and welcoming pubs all conveniently close. Helmsdale is perfect for families or friends, accommodating six people in three bedrooms (two are nice and large!). Bookings are available all year round, so you won't have to wait long for your next New Forest escape.

Burley is in the southwest quadrant of the national park. It's a friendly village with a chequered past. When settling in for a pint in the Stable Bar at The Queen's Head, be mindful that you might be sitting where smugglers planned to disperse their contraband, some of which was stored in a hidden cellar under the floor. The Queen's Head and the Burley Inn both serve tasty meals and are within a five-minute walk of Helmsdale, meaning you can go out for dinner without needing a taxi or a designated driver. Speaking of driving, the Burley Wagon, pulled by giant (but gentle) heavy horses, leaves from outside the pub, following well-worn tracks around the village and surrounding forest. Other notable Burley attractions include the Coven of Witches shop and the famous Burley Fudge Shop. New Forest Cider is just down the road from Helmsdale, with a popular cafe/restaurant as well as an excellent shop selling the local tipple. A 20 minute walk through the forest from the cottage will bring you to The White Buck Inn.

There are endless miles of footpaths and cycling routes accessible from Helmsdale and Burley village centre, with bicycle hire available locally if you don't have your own wheels. Local attractions include the New Forest Water Park, the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, Paulton's Park and Peppa Pig World, and Buckler's Hard. The Hampshire coastline and beautiful beaches like Milford on Sea are around 20 minutes drive, and you can take the ferry from Lymington to the Isle of Wight for a day trip.

There are lots of reasons people visit the New Forest. For some, it's the opportunity to spend time away from noise and bustle, enjoying long walks and leisurely bike rides through ancient forests and moors. Others love the traditional appeal of thatched cottages and free-roaming ponies, and the prospect of fantastic food is always tempting. The New Forest is a place where kids can climb trees, build dens and enjoy simple adventures without a screen in sight. It's a place where friends can catch up over pub meals after a day exploring historic properties and specialist museums, creating new memories to add to decades of friendship. Whatever your reason for booking a holiday cottage in the New Forest, you'll find Helmsdale a welcoming retreat.

  • Separate dining area with a solid wood table seats eight people and multi-aspect views over the front garden and the woodland across the road.
  • Country kitchen with beautifully crafted kitchen cupboards stocked with glasses, plates, bowls and other essentials for cooking and serving meals. There's an Aga plus a separate Stoves electric cooker, a ceramic butler's sink, a dishwasher, bread maker and a washer/drier. The kitchen has a round table that seats four to six people and is ideal for lazy breakfasts while the kids play outside.
  • Cloakroom with a WC, handbasin and heated towel rail.

Upstairs:

  • Two of the three double bedrooms are large and have kingsized beds with bedside tables and reading lights, wardrobes, chest of drawers and colour TVs. All beds are made up for the arrival of guests, and bath towels are provided.

  • Large family bathroom with a walk-in shower, bath with a handheld shower attachment, two heated towel rails, WC and a handbasin. There is an illuminated mirror with shaver and electric toothbrush charger points.

Outside: Park close to the door and crunch over the gravel to reach the front door, protected by a timber canopy covered with climbing plants. A cattle grid prevents any curious ponies from coming in to nibble the garden. The fenced rear garden is mainly lawn and has a large picnic table with sun shade, a Rattan Bistro set with a table and two chairs, a charcoal BBQ and a bicycle shed.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, bed linen and bath/hand towels are all included. Fixed stair gate, portable high chair and a travel cot (cot bedding not included) is available. Smoking is not permitted.
