14 Gatehouse dates back to 1843. Once a railway gate keepers cottage, it is now a welcoming three-bedroom holiday home that combines rustic charm with energy-efficient living. Set just outside the bustling market town of Ringwood on the edge of the New Forest National Park, and just 5 miles from Dorset, the cottage enjoys uninterrupted views over open fields and direct access to the Castleman Trailway—offering miles of traffic-free cycling and walking routes through some of the south’s prettiest countryside.
The cottage is tucked along a quiet lane, making it feel wonderfully secluded while still being within reach of Ringwood’s shops, pubs and cafés. A bridleway runs alongside the house, joining up with a 26-mile route that follows the old railway line—ideal for walkers, cyclists and anyone looking to explore the New Forest at a slower pace. The local farm shop is just a 15-minute walk away for fresh produce and essentials, and the traditional Elm Tree Pub is only 20 minutes on foot, perfect for a relaxing pint or supper after a day outdoors. Ringwood itself is around a 25-minute walk, offering a great choice of independent shops, restaurants and the popular Saturday market.
There’s plenty to see and do nearby: spend a day at Moors Valley Country Park with treetop trails and cycle hire, spot owls and reptiles at Liberty’s wildlife centre, or take a drive through the open forest to picnic among ponies. Lymington and the Isle of Wight ferry, the sandy beaches of Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, historic Salisbury, and even parts of the Jurassic Coast are all close by, offering something for all ages and interests.
This is a fantastic base for families, couples and friends who want to enjoy the freedom of the forest while still having everything they need close by.
