Lapwing Lodge is a spacious single-storey pine lodge at Rural Roosts, a small collection of lakeside lodges on a working farm near the village of Stainfield in Lincolnshire. Sleeping six guests across three bedrooms, it works well for families, friends or couples holidaying together who want somewhere peaceful without feeling isolated. The setting is one of the biggest draws here. The lodge overlooks a fishing lake surrounded by wildflower meadows, woodland and open countryside, with walks straight from the door and plenty of wildlife around the farm. It feels wonderfully tucked away without being remote, and the slower pace of this part of Lincolnshire is a real draw. There’s a private deck for outdoor meals, fishing included for guests, and Lincoln is less than 10 miles away for days when you want shops, restaurants or sightseeing.
The surrounding area has far more going on than many people expect. Lincoln itself makes an excellent day out, particularly around the Cathedral Quarter where cobbled streets, independent shops and cafés wind around Lincoln Cathedral and the Norman castle. Steep Hill is worth the climb for the views and atmosphere alone. Closer to the lodge, guests can join stretches of the Viking Way, which passes through Stainfield, or head onto the Water Rail Way for traffic-free walking and cycling between Lincoln and Boston. The Lincolnshire Wolds are within easy reach too, bringing rolling countryside, walking routes and traditional villages with proper village pubs and tearooms rather than tourist crowds. Woodhall Spa is another favourite nearby, known for its woodland walks, independent shops, golf course and wartime history.
Fishing, cycling and wildlife watching are a huge part of staying at Rural Roosts. Guests have access to two private coarse fishing lakes stocked with carp, bream, roach and rudd, while the farm itself has its own walking routes through woodland and around the reservoir. Birdlife is everywhere, particularly around the wetlands and meadows. Families can visit Rand Farm Park or Lincoln Zoo, while aviation enthusiasts are well placed for Lincolnshire’s RAF heritage attractions, including RAF Coningsby, East Kirkby and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The Lincolnshire coast is also closer than many visitors realise, with Skegness, Sutton-on-Sea and Mablethorpe all reachable for a traditional seaside day out. It’s a genuinely varied part of the country that still feels relatively undiscovered compared with some better-known holiday regions.
