The Old Post Office in Leintwardine is somewhere you'll feel settled the moment you arrive. It's a detached cottage with a bit of age to it, dating back to the 1800s, and that history still shows in the thick walls and the inglenook fireplace that anchors the sitting room. The wood burner tends to become the focus in the evenings, especially after a day out walking and exploring. It sleeps four across two bedrooms, with one on the ground floor, which gives it a bit more flexibility than you might expect from a cottage of this age. Outside, the garden is enclosed and private, the river is only a few minutes away on foot, and it's an easy wander down through the village. You've got The Lion right on the water and The Sun Inn a Parlour Pub just along the road, so heading out for a drink or a meal doesn't need much planning.
Leintwardine isn't trying to be a destination in the showy sense, and that's part of its appeal. It's a proper working village with the things you actually use while you're away — a good shop, a butcher worth calling into, and a fish and chip shop that people are prepared to queue for. Days here tend to take shape without much effort. A walk along the river in the morning, maybe looping out across the fields, then back through the village for lunch or something easy in the evening. There are plenty of footpaths heading off in different directions, and if you want a longer route, Mortimer Forest is a good choice. For a change of pace, Old Downton Lodge is only a short drive away and known locally for its excellent restaurant, The choice is yours.
If you do head out, this stretch of the Borders gives you plenty to work with. Ludlow is about 20 minutes away and has a bit more going on with markets through out the week, independent shops, and a strong food scene that draws people in year-round. The castle sits above it all and is worth a look while you're there. In the other direction, the Shropshire Hills open up quickly, with wide views across the Long Mynd and good walking routes around Carding Mill Valley only 25 minutes away. Hereford and Shrewsbury are both doable for a day out, each with a different feel - one quieter and more traditional, the other with its Tudor streets, and busier centre. Do not miss The Henry Tudor Inn a 1429 Hostellerie. Hay-on-Wye is a slightly longer trip 50 minute drive but easy enough if you want a day of bookshops and wandering, especially in late May when the famous Hay Festival is on.
