Stone Cottage sits down a quiet country lane where Herefordshire drifts into Shropshire and the Welsh borders. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down without even trying — surrounded by open fields, old trees, and the kind of birdsong that reminds you how peaceful the countryside can be. The detached stone cottage stands within mature gardens, offering privacy and space for children or dogs to wander safely. Inside, it feels relaxed and lived-in, not overly styled just comfortably furnished, with a wood-burning stove, three separate sitting rooms, and plenty of little touches that make it easy to feel at home. Sleeping four across two good-sized bedrooms, it’s the sort of place that encourages a slower pace and a few early nights, whether you're travelling as a couple or a family.
Leominster, about nine miles away, is the nearest town and well worth exploring. It’s packed with antique shops and independent cafés, and there’s usually a market or two happening. A little further south lies Ludlow, famous for its food scene and lively atmosphere. The markets spill out onto the square several times a week, and there’s even a riverside swimming spot behind the castle that locals love, complete with a small café. Don’t miss the farm shop on the edge of town as it’s a proper local favourite. Nearer still, the Black and White Village Trail meanders through Pembridge, Eardisland and Weobley — all chocolate-box villages with crooked timber houses, greens, and tea rooms that seem made for unhurried afternoons.
For those who can’t resist the outdoors, Mortimer’s Trail passes right by the cottage, linking Ludlow and Kington through woodlands, open hills, and hidden valleys. You can spend a morning exploring Croft Castle or Berrington Hall, both managed by the National Trust and surrounded by beautiful parkland perfect for picnics. The River Wye offers canoeing, while the Brecon Beacons beckon for bigger walks and sweeping views. However you fill your days — whether it’s exploring trails, browsing markets, or simply enjoying coffee in the garden room — you’ll be glad to come back to Stone Cottage at the end of it all.
