Living
Corrairigh is in Cornaigbeg with long views over low fields and the vast sky that Tiree is known for. The house was built in the 1920s by the owner’s great-grandfather and, despite two major renovations, still feels connected to its crofting origins. The recent refurbishment has made day-to-day living straightforward: three en-suite bedrooms, a warm and practical living room, and a well-equipped kitchen designed for real use rather than as a showpiece. On clear days, the Atlantic light reaches straight through the windows; when the weather is more dramatic, you’ll hear the wind before anything else. Balephetrish Beach is close, easy to reach without planning, and often shared with seals rather than people.
Cornaigbeg itself is quiet even by island standards. A handful of homes, stretches of machair that change from greens to bursts of colour in summer, and single-track roads that naturally slow the pace. It doesn’t take long before the habit of waving at passing drivers feels entirely normal. For supplies, Scarinish is the main hub, with the shop, post office, and ferry pier at the centre of everyday life. Places like the Rural Centre at Crossapol and An Iodhlann archive give shape to Tiree’s history in a matter-of-fact way, grounding the island’s stories in real objects and records. Landmarks such as the Ringing Stone — a carved boulder that produces a metallic sound when tapped — sit out on the headland with no fuss or signage, a reminder of how much of Tiree’s past survives in the landscape itself. Down at Hynish, the Skerryvore Lighthouse Museum explains the formidable work that went into the lighthouse standing far offshore.
Away from villages and landmarks, Tiree’s beaches and open land take over. Gott Bay, Salum, Balevullin, Crossapol and others all have their own character, shaped by tide, wind and the light. Watersports thrive here, and even if you aren’t surfing or windsurfing, it’s easy to appreciate why the island attracts so many people with boards and sails in tow. Plan your walks using local maps, or let them emerge organically as you wander along the shore, turning when you feel like it, and returning a different way. Wildlife is part of the backdrop: hares in the fields, corncrakes in early summer, and birds passing through as the seasons shift. Golfers can try the small course at Vaul, a simple layout with big views. Eating out is a pleasure at places like The Reef Inn, The Lodge Hotel, Scarinish Hotel, and local cafés, which offer delicious meals without ceremony. However, most guests find themselves returning to Corrairigh in the evening, cooking something tasty using island produce, and watching the gorgeous colours of the sunset. Arriving by ferry or small plane is part of the experience, as you step into a slower rhythm right away. Corrairigh is perfect for guests who want to enjoy their days at a slower pace rather than filling them with frenetic energy.
