Willow Barn brings a delightfully different feel to a countryside stay. It's an oak-framed conversion with a calm, considered finish rather than anything overly rustic, creating a light, airy atmosphere throughout. Sleeping couples or families with a flexible layout, the space works just as well for a short break as it does for a longer stay where you want to properly settle in. The main bedroom is on the ground floor, while upstairs opens onto a sociable living area with views across the surrounding fields. Double doors lead straight onto a private garden, so it's easy to drift between indoors and out when the weather plays along. There's a real sense of privacy too, helped by its own entrance and enclosed outdoor space. Hosts Tim and Shauna live next door and are happy to point you towards a good walk or a pub worth trying - that sort of local knowledge is always useful in an area like this, where there is plenty of choice.
This part of East Sussex has a slightly wilder feel than the South Downs, with rolling farmland, pockets of ancient woodland, and quiet lanes better suited to walking boots than traffic. The Cuckoo Trail runs nearby, a traffic-free route following an old railway line that’s popular with cyclists and walkers. For a decent lunch or evening meal, there are a handful of good local pubs within a short drive, and if you're happy to venture a little further, villages like Mayfield and Horam offer a mix of traditional pubs, delis and smaller independent spots.
When you're ready to explore further, it's the range of days out that really stands out. The South Downs are within easy reach, with open views and well-marked walking routes, while the coast is close enough for a change of pace. Beaches at Eastbourne, Pevensey Bay and Birling Gap are all within about 20 minutes, as are the family-friendly Knockhatch Adventure Park and Drusillas Park and Zoo. Inland, there's plenty of history to tap into, from Glyndebourne and Battle Abbey to the gardens at Nymans and the literary connections of Bateman's. Vineyards are also part of the local landscape, with Rathfinny Wine Estate offering tours and tastings if you fancy something a little different. However your day unfolds, coming back to Willow Barn is always a highlight.
