Barn @ Lodge Farm is a beautifully converted red-brick barn on the edge of Hognaston, a small Derbyshire village surrounded by rolling countryside and quiet lanes. Sleeping two guests, it has been thoughtfully designed to make the most of the original building, with exposed timber trusses, high ceilings, and large windows that create a wonderful sense of light and space. The contemporary Scandinavian-inspired interior feels calm without being minimalist, while underfloor heating and comfortable furnishings make it somewhere you'll happily spend time between days out. Although wonderfully peaceful, you're only a fifteen-minute walk from The Red Lion in Hognaston, a traditional village pub that has become a favourite stop for walkers, cyclists and visitors exploring this part of Derbyshire.
One of the pleasures of staying here is how much there is to do without travelling very far. Carsington Water is only a few minutes away and offers sailing, paddle sports, birdwatching and an eight-mile walking and cycling route around the reservoir. Wirksworth, less than ten minutes by car, is one of Derbyshire's most interesting market towns, known for its independent shops, annual arts festival and characterful streets that climb the hillside. Ashbourne, often described as the gateway to Dovedale and the southern Peak District, provides cafés, restaurants and traditional market town charm. The surrounding lanes are popular with cyclists, while footpaths branch off in every direction through fields, woodland and open countryside. Farm shops, tearooms and country pubs are scattered across the area, making it easy to fill a day without ever feeling rushed.
If you are interested in ‘stately homes’, this part of Derbyshire has plenty to choose from. Chatsworth, Haddon Hall, and National Trust properties at Kedleston and Sudbury are all no more than 30 minutes’ drive and have much to offer first-time and returning visitors to their houses, gardens, grounds and seasonal events. Buxton brings grand Georgian architecture, a wide range of shops, and theatre at the Opera House. Matlock Bath, with its cable cars and riverside setting, has a completely different atmosphere. Explore our industrial past and present in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, and with tours of Rolls Royce in Derby and JCB in Rocester. When you feel you have done enough for one day, spending time back at the Barn, in the garden, with a good book, simply watching and listening as the afternoon unfolds or the sun sets over the Barn’s roof is a perfect ‘slow’ end to any day.
