About Northborough Manor Gatehouse

Northborough Manor Gatehouse sleeps up to eight guests in four bedrooms and provides the perfect place for enjoying time away with friends and family. Sitting on the outskirts of the historic Cambridgeshire village of Northborough, this attractive holiday home is conveniently located just seven miles from Peterborough and eight miles from Stamford, making it easily accessible for a few nights away of relaxation or celebration.

Recently refurbished, Northborough Manor Gatehouse sits adjacent to the main house across the gravelled courtyard. Tucked away in a beautiful corner of England where peace and tranquility abound, the Gatehouse is steeped in history with immense character and charm and provides an excellent choice for a holiday whatever the time of year.

Northborough Manor (often referred to as Northborough Castle) is a fortified manor house with a long history.  For a time it housed the Claypole family, into which Oliver Cromwell married his favourite daughter.  Oliver’s wife also lived at the house upon his death. Located on the borders of Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire, this fabulous property still displays much of its original character and is an impressive example of Medieval architecture, a must-see for lovers of history and ancient buildings.

Northborough is fortunate enough to have an excellent pub serving great food (and superb local ales!), just a stone's throw from Northborough Manor. The village church is also a short stroll away and the resting place of Oliver Cromwell's wife, Elizabeth Claypole.

With Peterborough's city centre just seven miles away and the ancient riverside town of Stamford just a mile further, there are no shortage of attractions for day trips out. Visit magnificent Burghley House and Deer Park (home to the popular equestrian Burghley Horse Trials); Rutland Water for a day of outdoor adventure and watersports or Castor Hanglands Nature Reserve close to Peterborough. If you are keen on wildlife then it is also possible to drive to the coast for some bird watching at The Wash or some sea air. Alternatively, stay closer to home and explore the myriad of footpaths and lanes by foot or bike.  Cambridge, Ely and Lincoln are also each under an hour away by car.

Whether you are looking for somewhere special to celebrate a special occasion with friends or just want a relaxing family holiday, Northborough Manor Gatehouse assures a warm welcome at any time of the year.

Location (Cambridgeshire)

Northborough Manor Gatehouse dates back to the 14th century, but was rebuilt in the 17th Century. Used by Oliver Cromwell during the Civil War as a garrison for his troops and horses, the Gatehouse has been lovingly refurbished to bring it into the 21st Century without losing its former glory that makes it so special.

Accommodation Comprises:

Ground floor

  • Entrance Hall off which is a WC and a cupboard under the stairs with washer/dryer. Like many other rooms in the house, the hall displays original stonework and beams, as well as a gilded 18th century mirror and 17th century settle and coffer. Stairs take you up from the hall to the first floor.
  • The Drawing Room is ideal for pre or post-dinner drinks or relaxing on a rainy afternoon with comfy sofas and armchairs, a mahogany table for playing cards, large TV, a Bechstein grand piano and open fire.
  • The Dining Room has space for up to ten guests to sit around the beautiful 18th century table. For formal dining, there are silver candlesticks, silver cutlery and a full compliment of Royal Worcester china for ten.
  • At the heart of the house, the Kitchen blends 17th century character, with original stonework, beams, and cannon holes installed by Oliver Cromwell, with state of the art conveniences including a Smeg gas range with 7 hobs, 2 ovens and grill, a silent dishwasher to take the stress out of entertaining, large American-style Samsung fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee machine and hand-cut granite topped island. There is also a refectory table which is a great place for more casual meals and breakfasts.  There are  plenty of pots, pans, le creuset dutch ovens and utensils for the more ambitious self-catering guests.

First floor

  • Master bedroom with Kingsize four-poster bed and en-suite with shower, WC and hand basin.
  • Family bathroom with both power shower and free standing bath, as well as a hand basin and WC.
  • Twin bedroom.
  • Double bedroom with an en-suite shower room (including a WC and hand basin).
  • Double bedroom which also has an en-suite shower room (including a WC and hand basin).

The outside of Northborough Manor is every bit as impressive as the inside with an Orchard and Italian Garden for the use of guests. The Gatehouse stands across the gravelled courtyard from the Main Manor House with medlar tress in between.
