The detail
Orlege End, named after the fields it overlooks, is located on a working farm in West Lothian, Scotland. The contemporary conversion at the far end of the striking, traditional eighteenth century Crosswoodhill farmhouse has transformed the open-plan space into accommodation now known as Orlege. It’s now a real home away from home for a romantic escape or even a family getaway.
The two floors have an unusual layout and preserve some of the features of the building’s original role, rolling oats for feeding to livestock. A gallery overlooks the open-plan living space which is flooded with light thanks to rooflights. Elegant touches, such as the ash staircase with tension wire balustrades, work seamlessly with the solid oak kitchen units and granite worktops to provide a contemporary, yet homely atmosphere.
The house was designed with flexibility in mind and the luxurious bedroom upstairs sleeps up to three and can be configured in various ways, depending on your needs. The room can be made up with three single beds, or two of these can form a sumptuous superking bed. Use it as a double, a family room or as three singles. This bedroom also has a delightful ensuite bathroom. The rest of the upstairs is a cosy gallery area which looks out over the surrounding countryside and down onto the living area below. Here you’ll find comfy sofa and lounger, making it the perfect spot to curl up with a book. There is also a sofa bed which is a little bigger than a conventional single, ensuring a comfortable night’s sleep.
Head down the beautiful ash staircase and you’ll find the other double bed cleverly concealed during the day. This pull-down bed is disguised as an elegant solid oak cupboard when not in use and has a fully sprung mattress for comfort. When it’s bedtime, pull the bed down and a large curtain across and a cosy sleeping area is created, sectioned off from the living area. There is another bathroom adjacent to this space with a bath and a shower.
The beautiful open-plan living space is light and airy, thanks to the double-height ceiling and the natural light flooding through the original windows in the end gable and the new sliding glass doors that open out onto the courtyard. On warm summer days, throw the doors open and invite the fresh air in. On chillier evenings, light the stove and relax on one of the large leather sofas. The large kitchen is fully equipped and boasts granite worktops, underfloor heating beneath limestone flags and beautiful oak units. If you fancy taking lunch outside in the warmer weather, the kitchen table and chairs can easily be relocated to the private patio.
Orlege End is a fantastic base for exploring central and southern Scotland. In 30 minutes, you can be in the heart of historic Edinburgh, or in Glasgow in just an hour. West Lothian offers varied and attractive scenery, with plenty of hills to climb, country parks and cultural opportunities to explore. The farm itself has 1800 acres to explore and much of this has been declared an ‘area of great landscape value’, so make sure to pack your wellies.
