The Gilletts Cottage is a welcoming holiday home in a secluded location on the grounds of a 13th-Century manor house in Oxfordshire. Once two charming semi-detached cottages, it is now a spacious property with space to sleep eight people in five bedrooms (three twin and two single) and a layout that suits family or friends. Guests love the location on the edge of the village of Charney Basset, half a mile from the Georgian Chequers Inn with its excellent seasonal pub food menu and a stone's throw from the scenic River Ock.
Charney Bassett is one of those picture-perfect villages for which Oxfordshire is renowned. As well as the beautiful medieval manor house used as a conference centre and place for peaceful retreats, it has a church dating back to the 12th Century and a historic watermill. Far from being a museum, the village has a friendly and active community with events centred around the pub, church and village hall. It's a delightfully tranquil location yet convenient for shops, restaurants and supermarkets in Wantage and Faringdon, ten and 15-minute drives from the cottage.
The beauty of the Oxfordshire countryside is indisputable. Neatly sandwiched between the Cotswolds, the Chiltern Downs, and the North Sussex Downs, Charney Bassett boasts some beautiful footpaths, cycleways and bridleways to places like the Iron Age fort at Cherbury Camp, over the river along the delightfully named Goosey Lane, and to the nearby villages of Pusey, Lyford, Southmoor, Denchworth and Standford in the Vale. The designer outlets of Bicester Village are only half an hour away, as is the magnificent Blenheim Palace. Oxford is only 12 miles away with a handy Park and Ride in Seacourt.
