The Moray area offers a wide range of activities both on the water and in the hills. Enjoy some wild swimming from the harbour and do some snorkeling, you never know what you might see. We have seen tiny sea horses just outside the harbour's entrance. There have been recent sightings of Orcas in the area and there is a known pod of dolphins. The Whale and Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay, is a short distance away. Makes a lovely day out https://dolphincentre.whales.org/
If you want to learn how to paddle board - organise a session with https://www.bluecoastcullen.co.uk/ . This can be at Portknockie, Cullen or Sandend. The Cullen Sea School also offer a range of water activities for all ages and their link is https://cullenseaschool.co.uk/
Surfing lessons are also available https://www.surfschoolscotland.co.uk/ offering lessons nearby at Sandend. They also offer body boarding or paddle boarding sessions too.
Slightly further afield at Macduff there is the Macduff Aquarium https://macduff-aquarium.org.uk/. Tarlair, open air pool is under regeneration, but it's still worth a visit for the location and nearby beach (just a little climb over the cliff).
Multiple golf courses in the area within a few miles of the cottage - Cullen, Strathlene, Buckpool, Spey Bay, Banff (Royal Tarlair and Duff House Royal) are but a few.
For public transport to Portknockie - Bus Route 35 from Aberdeen or Elgin goes right through the middle of the village. This is operated by Stagecoach. Taigh Iasgair is about 100m from the nearest stop. A local circular Moray Council M.Connect 309 bus allows connection from Keith Railway Station to Portknockie.
Keith is about 13 miles from Portknockie and offers a wide range of local shops and restaurants/cafes. Elgin is about 17 miles from Portknockie and has large supermarkets, leisure centre with pool and ice rink. Steeped in history, the Elgin Cathedral and local museums are also worth a visit. Aberdeen and Inverness (both with airports) are 60-90 mins drive and offer the larger amenities cities can offer.
