About Finches Cottage

Finches Cottage is rustic on the outside and luxurious within. The three-bedroom holiday cottage is in the picturesque village of Egleton near Oakham, with far-reaching countryside views and space for six people. The layout is ideal for families, though it also works well for couples seeking luxury accommodation in this beautiful part of the country. Rutland Water Nature Reserve is around a 10-minute walk from the property, providing easy access to miles of footpaths and excellent bird watching opportunities.

All of the shops and amenities you need for a self-catering holiday in Rutland are two miles away in Oakham, where there is a wide choice of shops that include a twice-weekly market (Wednesday and Saturday). Oakham has an authentic historic charm with heritage buildings, including Oakham School, dating from 1584 and an alumnus that includes politicians, bishops, actors, and leading athletes. Other places of interest include the Grade II listed Victoria Hall, the Oakham Signal Box, and the wonderfully restored Oakham Castle, the oldest building of its kind in Britain.

Having Rutland Water practically on the doorstep means guests at Finches Cottage have great access to various watersports ranging from SUPs to wakeboarding. Cycle or walk around its perimeter, hire a boat or book a seat on the Rutland Belle and enjoy the views and the commentary. They also run a special Osprey cruise that is ideal for birdwatchers and photographers.

Local attractions include the Rutland Farm Park, Rutland County Museum, Bugtopia Zoo, Barnsdale Gardens, and the Falconry and Owl Centre. The Anglian Birdwatching Centre leads into the Egleton Nature Reserve and is within walking distance of Finches Cottage or takes a short drive to the Somerby Equestrian Centre and enjoy a guided horse ride in pretty countryside.

Rutland may be the smallest county in England, but it is packed with beautiful views, excellent attractions, wonderful walks and memorable cycling routes. At its heart is Rutland Water, a beautiful lake whose shores are within walking distance of Finches Cottage. It's a wonderful holiday destination in every season for the scenery and the full calendar of events that include fairs, festivals, markets, and performances.

Location (Leicestershire)

Accommodation Comprises:

Finches Cottage is a pretty period cottage with plenty of character. It is beautifully furnished to a very high standard, with the owners taking care of all the small details that make the holiday property immediately feel welcoming and comfortable.

Downstairs:

  • Original beams are an eye-catching feature of the cosy living room. It's a relaxing space with velvet sofas, soft cushions, thick carpet and soft shades that encourage guests to settle back and breathe out. Light the log burner and grab a book, turn the TV on and watch something on Netflix and Amazon, or pull out a board game and settle down for a few hours of family fun.
  • Elegantly furnished dining room with luxuriously upholstered dining chairs around the table that seats six. French doors open onto the patio and show off the stunning views. Throw them open on a summer morning and eat breakfast in the sunshine, or light some candles and set the mood for an indulgent dinner to celebrate something special.
  • Sunny kitchen with original beams, solid wood worktops, and fitted cupboards well-stocked with equipment and utensils. The John Lewis kitchen is beautifully finished with appliances that include a double oven, dishwasher, and thoughtful extras like ground coffee to use in the cafetiere.
  • Cloakroom with a WC and a handbasin.

Upstairs:

  • Spacious master bedroom with a king-size bed with a richly upholstered headboard, high-quality mattress, pillows and bed linen, cushions and throws. The room has a tall armoire, armchair and a dressing table. It's an elegant boudoir without being overly feminine.
  • Second bedroom with a double bed with a comfortable upholstered headboard, plenty of cushions and throws to help guests "nest" and feel settled, and a window overlooking fields and countryside to the rear of the cottage. A dressing table and "ghost" chair add to the stylish atmosphere.
  • The third bedroom is decorated with children in mind. It has small single bunk beds and a cute animal theme. Toys and books will quickly help younger guests feel settled and add to the enjoyment of their holiday.
  • Tiled bathroom with a large rainfall shower, WC and a handbasin.

Outside: A private rear garden has a patio near the house and a large fenced lawn leading down to fields behind the cottage. The garden is fenced to apx 2 foot high so jumpable for a medium size dog is so inclined. There is an outdoor table and chairs, and storage for bicycles and outdoor games. The driveway at the front provides off-street parking.

Additional Information: Utilities, WiFi, fuel for the log burner, bed linen and bath towels are all included. One or two well-behaved dogs are welcome, with the owner providing dog beds, clean blankets, dog treats, and a stairgate to encourage them to stay downstairs (small charge applies for dogs). Hampers are an optional extra to make your stay even more enjoyable - please speak with the owner about your requirements. Smoking is not permitted.
