Boot and Shoe Cottage is an idyllic riverfront holiday cottage in Wycliffe, six miles from Barnard Castle. Built on the bank of the River Tees in the 1700s, its charm will captivate you from the moment you arrive. A spacious double bedroom overlooks fields and farmland, and a twin room snuggled under the eaves sleeps a further adult/teen or two younger children. Before transforming into a welcoming home, the cottage was a pub and a cobbler's. A skillful restoration has brought original features like fireplaces, cupboards, and beams back to life, gently mixing with modern comforts that make Boot and Shoe Cottage a delightful place for your self-catering holiday in Teesdale.
Wycliffe is in Teesdale and a gorgeous part of the North Pennines AONB. It's well known amongst outdoor adventurers, anglers, and landscape photographers for its captivating scenery and also appeals to keen historicists and foodies. Start your exploration with a stroll around the village, stopping to admire the 12th-century St Mary's Church. Local footpaths follow the river and cross moors with many opportunities to spot birds and wildlife. There are lots of excellent fishing spots, and the cottage offers private fishing for guests. The cycling trails and play area at Hamsterley Forest are great fun, and bike hire is available if you don't have your own wheels. Don't miss the walk to High Force for fantastic waterfall views.
Local attractions include the antique centre and weekly market at Barnard Castle. The collections and Chateau at the Bowes Museum deserve a full day, as do the living Beamish Museum and Durham's spectacular cathedral, historic university, shops and restaurants. Other places to visit include Auckland Bishop, Raby Castle, Hadrian's Wall, Newcastle, York, and the Lake District National Park. Back at Boot and Shoe Cottage, you can unwind in the garden, enjoying the ever-changing views of the River Tees, or relax in the cosy sitting room by the wood-burning stove. With little light pollution, the area is also perfect for stargazing. Dining options are plentiful, with country pubs, coffee shops, and Michelin-starred restaurants all nearby.
