Pavilion Cottage is a beautiful Scottish holiday cottage which is located on the historic Galloway House Estate that offers an enclosed garden and swimming pool. It is prefectly located in a fantastic area with beautiful scenery, coastal walks, numerous places of interest and it is only a five minute walk to Rigg Bay. Rigg Bay is on the fringe of the fishing village of Garlieston, in the Machars region of Galloway within South West Scotland. It offers a private sandy beach where guests can relax, walk dogs or enjoy the fantastic birdlife including herons, peregrines, oyster catchers and avocets and if you are lucky you may see a seal swimming in the bay!
Garlieston village is just over one mile away where you will find the Harbour Inn which serves lunch and dinner, the local store and post office, two tennis courts, a children's play park and a bowling green. Garlieston Harbour is still a working harbour and fresh fish and lobster is brought in by two local fishermen. Whithorn, Wigtown (Scotland's National Book Town) and Newton Stewart are too within easy reach offering a larger selection of shops.
The Machars cycle route is very popular with cyclists, and if you don't want to bring your own bikes, they can be hired locally and delivered to the cottage for around £40 each a week for adults and children.
Galloway House Gardens are open to the public every year from March to October, and the woodland walk and arboretum with species azaleas and rhododendron burst into colour in the spring. Monkey puzzle and Weeping beech stand alongside eucalyptus, palm and gingko biloba, and the old handkerchief tree (Davidia) still draws many visitors in every year. Pears, figs, apples and soft fruit are grown in the old orchard and there are also a small family of Tamworth pigs and rare and minority breeds that can be seen grazing. Sometimes in the summer months a tea tent is erected in the paddock and visitors can enjoy a cream tea and watch the animals graze. Fresh free range eggs, garden produce and plants are also sold in the tent. There is always a delight to see during the spring and summer months with lambing taking place in March and May, calves often being born in June and various hatchings of ducklings, chick and guinea keets through the summer.
Guests usually receive a welcome box of fresh eggs and/or home grown produce, and delicious rare breed meat can also be purchased from the owners. Other treats to complete the culinary experience include weekly deliveries of fresh fish and the freshest lobster to order direct from the fisherman.
Other activities include: walking the Galloway Hills and the coastal routes; sea and salmon fishing or if you want to stay more locally there is always swimming in the heated open-air pool or you could set up a game of croquet or badminton on the old tennis lawn.
Pavilion Cottage is a haven for all seasons, and offers the perfect country retreat for anyone looking to escape the pressures of every day life. With its crackling wood burning stove, tasteful decor and other personal touches you will very quickly feel at home!
