About Pavilion Cottage

Pavilion Cottage is a bijou Scottish holiday cottage, converted from the former fruit store of the historic Galloway House Estate to offer unique and comfortable accommodation in a private enclosed garden with swimming pool. It is perfectly located in a fantastic area with beautiful scenery, coastal walks, numerous places of interest and it is less than five minutes walk to Rigg Bay. Rigg Bay is on the fringe of the fishing village of Garlieston, in the Machars region of Galloway within South West Scotland. It offers a secluded sandy beach where guests can relax, walk dogs or enjoy the fantastic birdlife including herons, peregrines, oyster catchers and avocets and if you are lucky you may see a seal or porpoise swimming in the bay!

Garlieston village is just over one mile away where you will find the Harbour Inn which serves lunch and dinner, the Hive, a buzzingly popular cafe serving breakfast lunch and teas - open (operates seasonal opening), the local store and filling station, two tennis courts, and a bowling green. Garlieston Harbour is still a working harbour and fresh fish and lobster is brought in by two local fishermen. Whithorn, Wigtown (Scotland's National Book Town) and Newton Stewart are too within easy reach offering a larger selection of shops.

The Machars cycle routes offer 84 miles over 4 colour-coded routes, popular with cyclists of all levels, and if you don't want to bring your own bikes, they can be hired locally.

Enjoy Galloway House Gardens on the doorstep with its wooded walks providing shade in the warmer months and arboretum (open year round and ablaze with wonderful spring colour). Monkey puzzle and weeping beech stand alongside eucalyptus, palm and gingko biloba, and the Scottish collection of Handkerchief TreesDavidia Invollucrata (Davidia) still draws many visitors in every year. Pears, figs, apples and soft fruit are grown in the old orchard and there are rare breed Castlemilk sheep that can be seen grazing. There is always a delight to see during the spring and summer months with brown hares and leverets, wild deer fawning taking place in May and June, calves often being born in neighbouring fields on the organic dairy farm next door.

Welcome hamper usually includes an artisan wholemeal/granary loaf and/or home grown produce - zero food miles, field to fork. Other garden produce and plants may be available to purchase in season. Other treats to order to complete the culinary experience include lobster which can be ordered straight from the local fisherman, as well as local meat and fresh or smoked fish. You should also sample the organic cheese from Ewe to You which is readily available in the local farm shop May to September and to order at all other times.

Other activities include: walking the Galloway Hills and the coastal routes; sea and salmon fishing; whisky or gin tasting tours at two local distilleries, including Outlander star, Sam Heughan's Galloway Distillery which sells the award winning Hills and Harbour Gin and his Sassenach spirits collection, and Bladnoch Distillery, Scotland's oldest southernmost distillery, also creating award-winning high quality Malt whisky. Wigtown has 17 book shops, galleries and gift shops and holds a number of literary and art festivals. Whithorn is brimming with ancient history and dates back over 1600 years: toady you can visit an ancient priory, and a visitor centre with celtic crosses, a full size, recreated Bronze age dwelling and cafes; or if you want to stay more locally there is always swimming in the heated open-air pool (open May to 1st week of October) or you could set up a game of croquet or badminton on the old tennis lawn.

Pavilion Cottage is a magical haven for all seasons, and offers the perfect country retreat for anyone looking to escape the pressures of every day life. With its crackling wood burning stove, tasteful decor and other personal touches you will very quickly feel at home!

Please note: Pavilion Cottage is not suitable for children under 18.
