Nordlys Cottage is a detached stone cottage built in the 1850s. It is situated in the small hamlet of Blackcraig, which is on the edge of Kirroughtree Forest Park. Kirroughtree walking routes, 7 Stanes MTB Trails, 2 lochs, bike hire and pet friendly visitor centre & cafe are within walking distance of the cottage. It is also part of the Galloway Forest Park which is the largest in the UK and has over 300sq miles of forest, lochs and wildlife opportunities to explore. Galloway Forest Park is a designated International Dark Sky Park with Gold Tier status and we have installed 2 large Velux windows to make the most of the incredible night skies.
As well as the vast Galloway Forest Park, we are also ideally situated to explore the miles of coast line along "The Scottish Riviera." We are just 10 mins from the beautiful, sandy, and pet friendly Mossyard Beach, and roughly centered between the popular harbour towns of Kippford and Portpatrick.
For the essentials we are 5mins drive or 30mins walk to the closest town, Newton Stewart, which has garages with EV chargers, independent shops, cafe's, pubs, restaurants, a community run cinema, The Vault Arts Centre live venue, vets, hairdressers, Co-op, Aldi & Sainsburys. It is divided by the River Cree which has fishing and salmon spotting opportunities.
We are also lucky to be 5 mins from Galloway Distillery, 15 mins from The Red Deer Range and Wild Goat Park, and the coming soon Dark Sky Observatory.

We fully renovated Nordlys Cottage over nearly 2 years and are very proud of the cosy home from home we have created. The accommodation comprises of a cosy living room with comfy L shape corner sofa and large swivel chair, gas effect log burner (the same ambience without the labour), Smart TV, soft lighting, open aspect views and patio doors which open out onto the large garden. The kitchen is fully equipped with oven, hob, full size fridge freezer, full size dishwasher, airfryer, coffee machine and dining table with seating for 6.
Off the kitchen to the rear is a small conservatory/sun room which is perfect for watching the garden birds. There is also a small downstairs bedroom with UK standard double bed, small storage cupboard, bedside table and Smart TV.
The stairs are open from the kitchen and have a hand rail fitted on the left side ascending, with a halfway curve to turn 90 degrees.
Upstairs you will find the master bedroom with king size bed, large overhead Velux window, bedside tables, wardrobe, dressing table and ensuite with shower, sink and toilet. There is also the twin room with zip & link beds which are 2 standard UK single beds but can be configured as a superking on request. This room has bedside tables, wardrobe, chair and Smart TV. Finally there is the main bathroom which has sink, toilet, walk-in shower and a freestanding bath under a large Velux window overhead and a Smart TV in front.
Our property has superfast WiFi making it suitable for streaming, gaming or remote working and we offer Netflix on every TV. You are welcome to access other apps on your own accounts but please remember to log out before you leave.
Externally we have a large, split level garden and private driveway for up to 2 vehicles in tandem. There is also street parking available. The rear, lower garden level can be accessed directly through gates off the driveway. This lower level is fully enclosed with approx 4ft fencing and can also be accessed from the sunroom/conservatory and living room patio doors. The upper level is enclosed but in parts this is only by low height walls or shrubs, and so we recommend dogs and children are supervised at all times when accessing the upper level. This level can only be accessed through gates from the lower level.
As dog lovers and owners, we wanted to create somewhere that welcomed house trained dogs (not only tolerated) but that also had a touch of luxury and human comfort that is often missing in dog friendly properties.
Nordlys Cottage is our own, much loved bolt hole and we hope it brings you the the same instant relaxation feeling it does to us.
