Hollins Cottage is a wonderfully relaxed holiday home in the Galloway Hills, close to Balmaclellan. It sleeps five people in three bedrooms and is ideal for families who love having loads of space indoors and outside, as well as gorgeous views. Walk amongst swathes of bluebells in spring, enjoy sitting outside with a glass of wine in the late summer evenings, and lighting the sitting room log burner in the winter after a chilly day exploring this fantastic landscape. The holiday cottage is available for bookings all year round.
Balmaclellan is a pretty hillside village near Galloway Forest Park and Loch Ken. The area is great for walking and mountain biking, with footpaths and trails weaving their way through beautiful scenery. There's a good village shop in Balmaclellan, which is a mile and a half from the cottage, with a good shop, Arts Centre and cafe three miles away in New Galloway. The nearest town Castle Douglas, is a scenic 16-mile drive away and a designated Food Town where you can buy local produce either at the monthly farmers market or at one of around 50 independent businesses selling food and drink. Delicious! If you're in the area in early August, make sure you save a day to visit the Stewartry Agricultural Show. The show is a highlight in the local calendar and always a great day out.
If you're serious about walking, then you'll be delighted to know that you can access the long-distance Southern Uplands Way nearby in Dalry. Closer to home, the Galloway Activity Centre offers a wide range of outdoor fun like mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, SUPs, zip-wires and much more! Loch Ken is a good spot to catch-and-release pike, roach, perch and the occasional bream. Naturally, being Scotland, there is a choice of excellent golf courses as well.
Day trips can include visiting Threave Castle and Threave Gardens, walking around Gatehouse of Fleet on the Solway Coast, browsing the galleries in Kirkcudbright, admiring the romantic ruins of Dundrennan Abbey, or topping up your shelves from one of the independent retailers in the book town of Wigtown.
Even sitting in the garden of Hollins Cottage is a delight. It's a peaceful haven for birds, and you'll often see red squirrels scampering. The area around the Galloway Forest Park was the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, and only the fourth in the world, so bring your binoculars and be prepared to be dazzled.
