Craignarget is steps away from the sand at Auchenmalg Beach with nothing between guests and Luce Bay but a few feet of tarmac and some pebbles. The traditional cottage's thick stone walls and comfortable furnishings ensure guests are warm and comfortable in every season. The adjacent cottage is also owned by the family and only occasionally used. There is space for up to four people in the one-bedroom cottage which has a double sofa-bed in the living room and a layout that is ideal for couples, friends, small families or solo travellers.
Auchenmalg is a stunning spot for a seaside holiday. The beaches of Dumfries and Galloway never feel busy or crowded, and it's easy to find a quiet spot to set up your deck chair in the warm sunshine. Walk along the shore to the Cock Inn, reputed to be the second-oldest pub in Scotland where the menu features freshly-caught local seafood and a range of home-cooked meals. Stranraer is only a 20-minute drive away on the southern shore of Loch Ryan, where there is an excellent choice of supermarkets and places to stock up for a self-catering holiday, including a weekly Wednesday market. Newton Stewart is a similar distance away and also offers a wide variety of places to eat, drink and shop. The smaller town of Glenluce and the pretty fishing village of Port William are both about six miles from the cottage.
Those who have never visited the south-west coast of Scotland before may be pleasantly surprised at how mild the weather is here. The warming currents of the Gulf Stream creates a climate that keeps the water a pleasant temperature for swimming and water-sports, feeling more like the south coast of England than Scotland. The beach opposite the cottage is ideal for swimming, with other local beaches to visit, including Monreith and Sandhead.
Walking, hill climbing, mountain biking and cycling, and golf are just a few of the many activities visitors can enjoy, as are horse riding and fishing. A resident seal frequently visits the shore near the cottage, and porpoises and the odd basking shark sometimes swim in the waters around the Mull of Galloway lighthouse. Remember to look up while you are here! The skies are as full of interest as the landscape with a diverse variety of birds such as oystercatchers, herons, buzzards and hen harriers thriving in this beautiful landscape. At night, the lack of light pollution makes the beach or the cottage garden the ideal spot for stargazing.
Accommodation at Craignarget is all on one level, so the cottage is perfect for those with very young children or limited mobility who want to enjoy a simple seaside holiday and explore this fantastic area with ease.
Owner details:
Rob & Judith joined Independent Cottages in February 2020
Accommodation Comprises:
When the owners purchased Craignarget and the neighbouring cottage (which is not rented and only occasionally occupied) almost 60 years ago, it didn't even have running water. It was extensively refurbished in 2019 to provide a very comfortable standard of accommodation with mod-cons like WiFi and underfloor heating, whilst retaining all of the interesting features and character.
Outside: The cottage has a garden with a safe area for playing. Garden table and chairs, and also deck chairs are provided for guest use and kept in the storage shed (which also provides lockable bike storage). There is off-street parking for at least two cars in an adjacent field, and lockable storage for bikes and other sports equipment.
Additional Information: All utilities, WiFi, bed linen and towels are included. Short breaks (minimum of four nights) are possible between November and March, depending on availability. Smoking and pets are not permitted.
EV Charging:
EV charging is not available at the cottage. The nearest charging point is at the Harbour View Community Cafe / Shop in Port William (6 miles) and in Stranraer and Newton Stewart (about 16 miles each). See 'Charge Point Scotland' for more information about charging points in the area.
