About Couthie Brae

Couthie Brae is a recently renovated dog-friendly bungalow, just a two minute walk from the centre of Wigtown on the south west coast of Scotland. With a contemporary and sociable living space as well as three fantastic bedrooms and bathrooms, this detached self-catering holiday home is a perfect base for families and groups of friends wanting to explore the local area. Surrounded by a large hilly mature garden, you can enjoy far reaching countryside and sea views, whilst still being a stone's throw from all the amenities in town. Discounts are available for singles and couples holidaying on their own between November and March…please contact the owner.

Wigtown, which was officially designated Scotland’s National Book Town in 1998, is a book lovers' paradise. Spend lazy afternoons browsing the independent bookshops before visiting the quirky gift shops and cafes. You can stock up on provisions at the supermarket and there is also a post office, cash machine and a visitors' information centre where you can find out more about the history of the area.

When you are ready to explore the surrounding countryside, lace up your walking boots and work up an appetite on one of the many stunning local walks. Look out for ospreys and salmon in the river Bladnoch on the four mile Wigtown Martyrs Walk or explore the cliff walks and fascinating stone circles and castle ruins on the Machars Peninsula. Cyclists, walkers and bird watchers alike will love Galloway Forest Park which has a wide range of routes, including the Red Kite Trail. The parks' Gold Tier Dark Sky status will also appeal to keen star gazers. Alternatively enjoy a round of golf at nearby Wigtown and Bladnoch Golf Course or visit one of the oldest Scottish whisky distilleries at Bladnoch Distillery and Visitor Centre.

For a change of scene head to one of the beautiful and relatively undiscovered local beaches, or visit the picturesque little port of Portpatrick, just forty five minutes away. Sea fishing trips can be arranged from here and there are plenty of places to eat, and things to see and do. Or if you are looking for something completely different, enjoy a day trip to Belfast from Cairnryan on Loch Ryan. Ayr and the countryside that inspired Robert Burns are just an hour and a half away by car, whilst the national cultural hub of Glasgow with its Victorian and Art Deco architecture, acclaimed museums and thriving music scene, is two hours away.

There is so much to see and do in this stunning corner of Scotland, but you would also be forgiven for simply enjoying some time out in the beautiful and tranquil surroundings of Couthie Brae.
