Elm Grove is a lovely family holiday home in the quiet village of Hirwaun slap-bang in the middle of the southern border of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is newly redecorated throughout, with lots of little touches that will make it feel like a home away from home. There is space for four people to sleep in three bedrooms, with the house also offering an enclosed garden with lawn and decking, secure bike storage and off-street parking. An active holiday with family and friends means lots of hungry people at the end of an action-packed day, so the owners have ensured the kitchen has all the equipment and appliances you need for self-catering. If you're too tired to cook, The Glancynon Inn is only a ten-minute walk away. They serve Penderyn single malt whisky and Brecon Botanical gin distilled a scenic half-hour's walk from the cottage.
Hirwaun (pronounced HEAR-wine) is perfect for the Brecon Beacons and the stunning South Wales coast. This part of the country is milder than Snowdonia and rarely gets snow, making walking and mountain biking favourite year-round activities for locals and visitors. It's no secret that it rains in Wales. It's one reason that it is so lush and green! Inclement weather is an advantage when you stay at Elm Grove as you're so close to Waterfall Country and one of the national park's best-known waterfalls: Sgwd yr Eira. The experience of walking behind the cascading water is unforgettable and gives fantastic photos. The plunge pool immediately in front of the fall is ideal for cooling off in summer. There are other places to dip along the 4.5-mile Four Waterfalls Walk, so bring your bathers if you're a lover of outdoor swimming.
Mountain biking is another excellent way to enjoy the beautiful landscape of the Brecon Beacons. Hirwaun is within easy reach of various amazing trails to suit all abilities, including Afan Forest and the superb DH routes designed by leading trail builder Rowan Sorrell at Bike Park Wales. Rhigos Mountain and the trails at Pen y Cymoedd are within a 15-minute drive, and you're close to the Gravity Family Bike Park at Dare Valley. If you head east, you've also got the Black Mountains.
Day trips can include climbing Pen-y-Fan. The path to South Wales' highest peak starts at the Storey Arms pub. There are more than 500 acres of trails in the Dare Valley Country Park, which is only seven miles from the cottage. The National Showcase Centre is a fantastic all-weather attraction between April and November. There is always a programme of fun events during the school holidays at Cyfarthfa Park. While you're here, save a day to explore the breathtaking Gower Peninsula, a place so spectacular that it was Britain's first official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It's only a 40-minute drive from Elm Grove, as are the shops, museums and other attractions of Cardiff.
