The Pentland Hills Regional Park is one of the main attractions in Midlothian. Walkers can meander through the lowlands, relaxing by the many lochs and serene farmlands. Dark, ancient woodlands can also be explored in the area, full of intrigue and beauty. For those looking for more of a challenge, the hills provide a great option. From easy routes to more skilled climbs, the Pentland Hills offer wonderful views of the surrounding area. Heights reach up to 1,700 feet, at Scald Law and offer amazing sights including the city of Edinburgh, the Kingdom of Fife and the beautiful Scottish coast. Midlothian is also known for its golf courses; perfect for a relaxing day out.
A visit to the region would not be complete without venturing to the Rosslyn Chapel. Infamous in Scotland for its stunning Late-Gothic architecture, its structure has many myths, legends and stories laced into it. With pinnacles, gargoyles and spectacular stained glass windows, the design is both impressive and complex. There are 213 intricately carved boxes within the chapel that remain open to interpretation. More than 110 carvings of 'green men' exist in and around Rosslyn. These are faces with greenery and plants growing from them, said to be a symbol of fertility. A secret, sealed crypt can also be found in the chapel, with rumours that it holds the crown jewels of Scotland or the Holy Grail. Some even say it holds the mummified head of Jesus Christ. Links to the Freemasons are also whispered about, with Rosslyn Chapel being one of the settings in the novel, The Da Vinci Code. This enticing, cryptic structure is full of secrets waiting to be discovered!
Other notable buildings in Midlothian include Hawthornden Castle and Arniston House. Hawthornden Castle is made up of 15th century ruins, 17th century structures and magical, man-made caves. One nearby cavern, Wallace's Cave, is named after the great Scottish hero. Arniston House offers architecture and parks that have been home to the Dundas family for 400 years. The building itself is a work of art and you can explore the building to see famous paintings from many Scottish artists.
Vast hills and beautiful scenery make up most of Midlothian, with stunning pieces of architecture found throughout the region. From the legends of the Rosslyn Chapel to the affluent rooms of Arniston House, there are many different places to visit, all with their own feeling of Scottish history – A great holiday destination for historians and those looking for a tranquil scenic Scottish experience.
