THE VILLAGE
Ashford-in-the-Water is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Aisseford (the ford at the ash trees). Situated in a meander of the River Wye, it’s a beautiful village of quaint stone cottages tumbling down gentle valley sides to the river, where visitors like to feed the ducks at the ancient Sheepwash Bridge or paddle in the crystal waters.
The Saxon Holy Trinity Church contains beautiful carvings, and stained glass by major pre-Raphaelites. The village pub and the cosy Tea Room have outdoor seating from which to enjoy the views of the valley and hills, while Rafters at the Riverside Hotel provides fine dining in a converted mansion.
The village shop is crammed with delicious local fare.
Nearby attractions include the famous towns of Bakewell and Buxton with their regular markets and many shops and cafes; Matlock and Matlock Bath which offer caving, a model railway and cable car rides; and many stately homes including Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick Hall and Thornbridge Hall.
Countless walks are possible from the door whether gentle strolls along the river or moderate climbs to see 360 degree views over the Peaks. More challenging walks are a short drive away to the wild moors and ridges of Kinder Scout and Mam Tor.
THE PEAK DISTRICT
The Peak District National Park is an area of outstanding natural beauty that makes a fantastic all-year-round holiday destination. Ashford-in-the-Water lies in the Wye Valley within the White Peak, a limestone cap surrounded by the higher gritstone Dark Peak.
The rolling hills and fields of the White Peak are criss-crossed by verdant dales and meandering streams. Farms and villages are scattered throughout and the many footpaths and bridleways allow easy access to stunning scenery.
The vegetation is lush with green pastures, dry stone walls, arable crops and native woods. In contrast, the Dark Peak to the north, east and west has dramatic gritstone ridges and high moorland plateaus with amazing rock outcrops.
Throughout the area there is much evidence of ancient human habitation with Neolithic tumuli and barrows, picturesque ruins and ancient stone field barns dotting the countryside.
The Peak District is famous as a mecca for hiking and cycling, but offers many other attractions too, including pretty villages and stately homes; steam railways; antiques and livestock markets; Michelin starred restaurants and Gastro pubs, and many cultural events including local produce and music festivals, theatre and opera.
